Here?s a real ?pearl? of academic wisdom and insight for your consideration as y?all wind down your Fall 2012 semester at Baylor University. According to a Chronicle of Higher Education article published earlier this year entitled ?Stop Telling Students to Study for Exams?, faculty members (e.g., yours truly) who encourage their students to study for exams are apparently ?guilty? of communicating ?? to students that the process of intellectual inquiry, academic exploration, and acquiring knowledge is a purely instrumental activity?designed to ensure success on the next assessment.? Sorry about that ? the last thing that I would ever want to do is convey that ?? the process of intellectual inquiry, academic exploration, and acquiring knowledge is a purely instrumental activity?!
