"One Ford" strategy top focus, says incoming Ford COO

LOS ANGELES/DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co has spent six years under Chief Executive Alan Mulally developing its 'One Ford' global product strategy. Building on this plan is Mark Fields' top priority when he starts running the automaker's global operations next month.

"The priorities are almost exactly identical to the priorities we've been working on," Fields told reporters during a roundtable at the Los Angeles Auto Show. "First off is delivering the 'One Ford'. It's a timeless plan."

Fields' public comments on Wednesday were his most expansive on his upcoming role as chief operating officer since the second-largest U.S. automaker announced his promotion this month, effective December 1.

Fields, 51, who is often described as tenacious, has led Ford's largest business unit, North America, for the last seven years and is viewed as the front runner to succeed Mulally.

However, the automaker has stopped short of formally anointing the 23-year Ford veteran Fields as its next CEO, and has said Mulally will stay on through 2014, about a year longer than analysts expected.

Mulally is closely identified with Ford's recent success. Under his 'One Ford' plan, Mulally pushed Ford to build global models that can be sold around the world with a few tweaks. Ford has estimated the strategy helped make overall product development two-thirds more efficient between 2006 and 2012.

Fields, who will be Ford's first COO since 2006, said he will look for new opportunities to deploy the One Ford plan. In South America, for example, Ford's lineup will be almost 100 percent global models by 2014. It was almost entirely regional in 2011.

"We are just starting to see the full potential of the global scale and the operating margin benefits through the One Ford plan," Fields said. "We are really still at the beginning stages of operating truly as a global company."

FINDING A SUCCESSOR

In his new role, Fields said he will oversee Ford's day-to-day global operations, while Mulally will shape the long-term execution of his 'One Ford' plan and mentor top executives.

"We're so glad that Alan is going to be staying around and he's going to be leading the long-term development of the 'One Ford' plan," Fields told reporters at a second event Wednesday.

Analysts said Ford's top executives, including Fields, would benefit from Mulally's mentorship over the next two years. The move allows Mulally to help steer Ford's overhaul of its European operations as well as its expansion in China.

But other analysts said the move also muddied the waters, raising questions about who is in charge, while heightening the risk that Fields could be hired away.

"He knows he's being tested," University of Michigan Professor Gerald Meyers, a former chairman of American Motors Corp, said of Fields. "It's a matter of how much patience he has. Ford has to be very careful about that."

Mulally is credited with turning around Ford while avoiding the government bailouts needed to save its crosstown rivals General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLC in 2009.

Ford has also become a more open and collaborative place during his tenure, a change from its previous internal culture of "empire building and back-biting," Executive Chairman Bill Ford said earlier this month.

Fields played a key role in ushering in this new internal culture, Mulally and Bill Ford have said. As COO, Fields will lead the weekly business review meetings that have been among the most visible signs of cultural change at Ford.

On Wednesday, Fields said preserving this focus is essential.

"You don't change a culture in just a couple of years," he said. "We are really dedicated to making sure that we root that in the organization and that's living it every day."

White House, Congress talk as 'fiscal cliff' nears

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Amid increasing anxiety that the White House and top Republicans are wasting time as the government slides toward an economy-rattling "fiscal cliff," administration officials are heading to Capitol Hill for talks with congressional leaders.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and senior White House aide Rob Nabors were to visit separately Thursday with the four leaders of the House and Senate to discuss how to avert a series of tax increases and spending cuts due to begin in January. Republicans complain that the White House is slow-walking the talks and has yet to provide specifics on how President Barack Obama would curb the rapid growth of benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

There's been little evident progress in negotiations between the White House and the lead GOP negotiator, House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. Boehner's lieutenants say the White House has been slow to engage.

"We have not seen any good-faith effort on the part of this administration to talk about the real problem that we're trying to fix," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

Obama is mounting a public campaign to build support and leverage in the negotiations, appearing at the White House with middle-class taxpayers and launching a campaign on Twitter to bolster his position.

"Right now, as we speak, Congress can pass a law that would prevent a tax hike on the first $250,000 of everybody's income," Obama said. "And that means that 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses wouldn't see their income taxes go up by a single dime."

Obama is insisting that tax rates go up on family income exceeding $250,000; Boehner is adamant that any new tax revenues come from overhauling the tax code, clearing out tax breaks and lowering rates for all.

Republicans are also demanding significant cuts to so-called entitlement programs like Medicare, such as an increase in the eligibility age for the program from 65 to perhaps 67.

"It's time for the president and Democrats to get serious about the spending problem that our country has," Boehner said at a news conference Wednesday in the Capitol. Boehner, like Obama, expressed optimism that a deal could be reached.

At issue are steep, across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs set to strike the economy in January as well as the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts on income, investments, married couples and families with children. That combination of tax increases and spending cuts would wring more than half a trillion dollars from the economy in the first nine months of next year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

No one anticipates a stalemate lasting that long, but many experts worry that even allowing the spending cuts and tax increases for a relatively brief period could rattle financial markets.

From their public statements, Obama and Boehner appear at an impasse over raising the two top tax rates from 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent. Democrats seem confident that Boehner ultimately will have to crumble, but Obama has a lot at stake as well, including a clear agenda for priorities like an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws.

Leveson report on Murdoch: Evidence of cover-up

In its report on Britain's phone-hacking scandal, the Leveson Inquiry described a failure of management systems at newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch and others.

By Keir Simmons, NBC News

LONDON -- The phone hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch?s News of the World involved more than just allegations that journalists on the paper illegally listened to people?s cell phone messages. As is often the case with major scandals, there were also allegations of a cover-up. It is these claims that have caused the biggest headache for senior people at News Corporation.

Dig down into Thursday?s inquiry report and it is the possibility of a cover-up that is the focus. From page 348, the report, overseen by Lord Justice Brian Leveson, accuses Rupert Murdoch, his son James and News Corporation of either failing to address allegations of "widespread criminality within the organization? or ? if they didn?t know about it ? being guilty of a "significant failure in corporate governance."

These are words that will concern lawmakers in the United States, where News Corporation has many media arms, including Fox News and 20th Century Fox, and recently announced that it is buying a 49 percent stake in the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network.

The Leveson report refers to a series of e-mails and meetings in 2008 when James Murdoch signed off on a substantial payment to a phone hacking victim. He was then head of News Corporation's UK arm, News International. The question during the inquiry was this: How much was James Murdoch told about phone hacking at the News of the World when he signed that check. Those involved said they couldn?t remember.

"If the explanation of James and Rupert Murdoch is correct," the report concludes, then "One or more parts of the management? was engaged in a determined cover-up to keep relevant information about potential criminality within the organization from senior management."

Rupert Murdoch's papers, UK media condemned in phone-hacking report

The official inquiry into the practices and standards British newspapers, prompted by the phone hacking scandal is out. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

Leveson does not appear convinced that this was the way events actually unfolded, writing that managers had "no reason or motive to conceal relevant facts" from James Murdoch. He goes no further ? acknowledging there is an ongoing criminal investigation of what happened at News of the World. But he says again and again, if people at News Corporation didn't know what was going on, that itself is a significant failure.

"In truth, at no stage, did anybody drill down into the facts to answer the myriad of questions that could have been asked and which could be encompassed by the all embracing question 'what the hell was going on'?" Leveson says. "On any showing, these questions were there to be asked and simple denials should not have been considered sufficient. This suggests a cover up by somebody and at more than one level."

Earlier in the report, on page 305, Leveson considers the integrity of Rupert Murdoch?s company. "An organizational culture that is founded on integrity and honesty would require not only full co-operation with law enforcement, but also a determination to expose behavior that failed to comply with the law," Leveson says.

"What happened at the (News of the World) in relation to voicemail interception in this context is particularly informative about the culture that pertained both within the corporate and editorial operation," he concludes.

News Corporation has cooperated closely with British police in the last two years, authorities have said.

None of this reveals any new information, but it does tell us what an independent and experienced British judge makes of it. The British criminal investigation is still underway and the potential trials of former senior Murdoch executives, Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, may bring new details of what went on inside of Murdoch?s businesses. When those trials are over, likely sometime next year, Leveson will write another report that should provide more conclusive analysis.

Olivia Harris / Reuters

Chris Bryant, a member of the British parliament, leaves Queen Elizabeth hall carrying copies of a report by Lord Justice Brian Leveson's on media practices, in London on Thursday. The far-reaching inquiry into British newspapers called for a new independent watchdog enshrined in law to regulate the press and prevent the type of excesses which led to a phone hacking scandal within Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid.

Whatever you do, DON'T even think about studying for the final exam!

Here?s a real ?pearl? of academic wisdom and insight for your consideration as y?all wind down your Fall 2012 semester at Baylor University. According to a Chronicle of Higher Education article published earlier this year entitled ?Stop Telling Students to Study for Exams?, faculty members (e.g., yours truly) who encourage their students to study for exams are apparently ?guilty? of communicating ?? to students that the process of intellectual inquiry, academic exploration, and acquiring knowledge is a purely instrumental activity?designed to ensure success on the next assessment.? Sorry about that ? the last thing that I would ever want to do is convey that ?? the process of intellectual inquiry, academic exploration, and acquiring knowledge is a purely instrumental activity?!

Forrester: Microsoft licence hike makes no sense

Windows users can expect a 15% increase in the cost of licensing key Microsoft products as the software giant raises its prices.

From December 1 2012, Microsoft will increase the price of per-user licensing of several products including Exchange, its Lync communications server, Windows Server and Terminal Services.

The change in price reflects change in usage, as more users access Windows software from several devices, rather than a single PC. But analyst Forrester believes the licence fee increase is flawed and will erode the value of its products against the likes of Google.

Forrester's Duncan Jones said Microsoft was struggling to decide how to shift from device Client Access Licences (CALs) to per-user CALs.?

?A lot of companies are on device licensing. Some have a mixture. If everyone has PC then per user makes sense, but if you are a company like a manufacturer where not all users have a PC, then per device is cheaper,? said Jones.

But per-device licensing for software is obsolete in the mobile and virtual world according to Jones.?

"It is impossible to control and not relevant to the app internet world. Gradually software companies will change licensing accordingly,? he said.

However Jones believes Microsoft?s approach to changing its client access licensing is flawed.?

He said: ?I told Microsoft it was a mistake to charge more for user CALs than device CALs.?It?s inside-out thinking.?

"There is no evidence that people are deriving more value from MS software and people will not be willing to pay 15% more because they can access it from a tablet.?

While Microsoft has increased the pricing of user CALs to address device proliferation, it has not added anything extra to justify the price increase. He said they should have cut the cost of device CALs rather than increase user CALs.?

?User CALs are not more valuable than device CALs. Device CALs now have less value,? said Jones.

He believes the change in pricing will affect how IT departments upgrade. If they have an Enterprise Agreement (EA), their organisation buys the right to upgrade to the newest product release, but businesses may consider they are happy with the current release.?

?Many will likely stay put on current versions,? he added, which will impact EA revenue.

    Lack of communication

In a research paper on Microsoft's licensing price increase, analyst Gartner criticised Microsoft for not informing its customers directly. The supplier has relied on software resellers to explain to customers what the price increase will mean.?

In the report, Gartner research direct Frances O'Brien noted: ?Gartner agrees that some, but not all Microsoft customers may have received additional value from user-based CALs.?

"But we believe that Microsoft?s silence and lack of advance notice to its customers may prove problematic for some organisations that rush to renew early, simply to avoid a price increase.?

"These price hikes ? combined with licensing changes and the inherent cost implications for SQL 2012, System Center 2012, Windows Server 2012, and the price changes alluded to in Microsoft's 1 October 2012 Product Use Rights Document for SharePoint Server 2013 and Lync Server 2013 ? could add unexpected expenses to some customers' budgets.?

Phil Heap, head of products and services at Fast, the software asset management specialist, said: ?This adds another layer of complexity to Microsoft licensing and it?s obviously being driven by the need for flexible and mobile working scenarios.?

MegaFon raises $1.7 billion in Moscow, London IPO

MOSCOW (AP) ? Shares in MegaFon made a disappointing debut in a $1.7 billion initial public offering in Moscow and London Wednesday when Russia's second-largest mobile phone operator was forced to price its stock at the bottom end of its target.

MegaFon, the last of Russia's big three mobile companies to hold an IPO, said on Wednesday that it had sold 15 percent of its stock at $20 a share ? at the bottom end of its range. The flotation values the company below analyst expectations at $11.1 billion.

The company's stock was down 1.7 percent, at $19.66 a share in midday trading on the London Stock Exchange.

MegaFon stock will be traded in the form of shares in Moscow and global depositary receipts in London. The Moscow-based company's listing is the biggest by a Russian company since aluminum producer Rusal went public in Hong Kong in 2009, raising $2.2 billion.

MegaFon, which is largely focused on the Russian market, is controlled by a holding company of Russian tycoon Alisher Usmanov which owns 55.8 percent, while Sweden's TeliaSonera has 29 percent. Usmanov is Russia's richest man, estimated to be worth $18 billion.

Despite the IPO's poor performance, chief executive Ivan Tavrin hailed it as "a clear endorsement of MegaFon's investment case" which "reflects investor appetite for the Russian mobile data growth story."

The IPO has not been without its problems: in October the flotation was put on hold after Goldman Sachs quit as a key bookrunner in the deal. Rating agency Standard & Poor's last week took the company off its negative watch, but confirmed a negative outlook, meaning that a downgrade is possible if the company's governance practices threaten its performance.

Tiger blood! Trolls! Timeline of 'Men' woes

    Mitchell Haddad / CBS

A 2003 photo from "Two and a Half Men."

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

For the first six-plus years of its run, the biggest headlines surrounding "Two and a Half Men," had to do with the show's runaway ratings. Since it premiered in 2003, the CBS comedy has consistently ranked among the most-viewed in all of television. This season alone, the show has averaged approximately 13 million viewers per episode, according to Nielsen ratings. . It would now be fair to say that a good portion of those viewers are also familiar with the show's teen star Angus T. Jones and his plea for viewers to "stop watching" the show he's deemed to be "filth."

But this is far from the first scandal surrounding the show or those who make it, including former lead Charlie Sheen and "Men" creator Chuck Lorre. Remember these?

    2009: Charlie Sheen & Brooke Mueller's Christmas 911 call
Sheen's then-wife Brooke Mueller placed a 911 call alleging she'd been the victim of domestic violence. "My husband had me with a knife. I was scared for my life and he threatened me," she said in the recording. Sheen was arrested on domestic violence charges; ultimately, Sheen worked out a plea deal when the case went to court, and was sentenced to rehab, probation, and domestic violence counseling.

2010: Sheen allegedly trashes Plaza Hotel room
Although he'd later call allegations that he flew into an intoxicated rage at New York's Plaza Hotel while vacationing with his family "overblown," the incident was a catalyst for the escalating troubles surrounding the actor -- and the show.

2011: 'Two and a Half Men' shuts down production early
CBS finally halts production weeks ahead of schedule, citing "the totality of Charlie Sheen's statements, conduct and condition."?

2011: Lorre's vanity card slams Sheen
In one of Lorre's show-ending vanity cards, the "Men" creator finally got some thoughts off his chest. In a thinly veiled slam of Sheen, he wrote, "I exercise regularly. I eat moderate amounts of healthy food. I make sure to get plenty of rest. I see my doctor once a year and my dentist twice a year. I floss every night. I've had chest x-rays, cardio stress tests, EKG's and colonoscopies. I see a psychologist and have a variety of hobbies to reduce stress. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. I don't have crazy, reckless sex with strangers. If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm gonna be really pissed."

2011: Sheen, 'winning,' speaks of 'tiger blood,' Adonis DNA, the 'Sober Valley Lodge'
No one can explain this one better than Sheen himself. Watch the original interview from TODAY.

    2011: Sheen fired from 'Men'
Just weeks after the season's premature end, Warner Bros. Television announced March 7 that "after careful consideration," it had "terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men' effective immediately."

2011: Sheen turns on co-star, calls him ?troll?
In another chapter from the ?don?t cross Charlie Sheen? book, the actor accused his former costar Jon Cryer of being a ?turncoat? and a ?troll.? ?"Like I said: You're with me, or you're with the trolls," Sheen told E! News March 8. "Obviously he's with the trolls."?Cryer took it in stride, joking on ?Conan,? ?I?ve had to hide the fact that I?m a troll.??

2011: Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher split
The show's new leading man, Ashton Kutcher, was tabloid fodder for months amid rumors that he'd been cheating on wife Demi Moore. On Nov. 17, the two officially split. "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," Moore said in a statement.

    2012: Show co-creator disses women
In March 2012, "Men" co-creator Lee Aronsohn didn't exactly endear himself to female viewers by announcing that women "make men damaged" and that he wasn't a fan of women-centric shows, saying, "Enough, ladies, I get it. You have periods." He later apologized via Twitter.

Apple's ultra-thin iMac to become available on Nov. 30

    28 min.

Apple announced an upcoming?update to its popular iMac desktop computer line in October, but on Tuesday the Cupertino-based company finally confirmed that the 21.5-inch version of the?new, ultra-thin desktop will be available on Nov. 30.?

"Isn't it amazing how something new makes the previous generation instantly look old?" asked?Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, when he first?unveiled what a press release calls "the most advanced desktop Apple has ever made."?The new iMac looks quite similar to the previous generation from the front, but from the side, it is incredibly clear that the desktop has undergone a significant redesign: It has an edge that's a mere 5 millimeters thin.?There is, of course, a bit of a bulge in the middle of the computer's back, for the sake of some internal components, but it still has about 40 percent less internal volume than its older siblings and weighs about eight pounds less, as NBC News' contributor Joel Johnson pointed out when we first heard about the new iMac.

The new iMac is offered in 21.5-inch and 27-inch versions, which start at $1,300 and $1,800, respectively. The new desktops have displays with 75 percent less reflection than the prior generation and a Fusion Drive option (which combines a standard hard drive and a flash-based one to offer up to 60 percent faster performance).

While the 21.5-inch version of the new iMac will begin arriving in customers' homes on Nov. 30, its?27-inch counterpart won't begin shipping until December, according to a press release issued by Apple.

(AP) ? A week off, some rest and a poignant plea from a 15-year-old cancer patient got the New York Giants back on track.

Now the rest of the NFL has something to worry about. The Giants are playing like world champions again.

A refreshed Eli Manning came back from the bye week and threw three touchdown passes as the Giants embarrassed Aaron Rodgers and the streaking Green Bay Packers 38-10 on Sunday night.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak and gave the Giants (7-4) a two-game lead in the NFC East with five games left in the regular season. The dominating performance also ended a five-game winning streak for the Packers (7-4), who fell a game behind Chicago in the NFC North.

"We just had to go out there with a lot of confidence and play like we are capable," Giants center David Baas said. "I felt we did that. We showed everybody. People that counted us out, they better wake up."

No one was more pleased with the Giants than Adam Merchant. The 15-year-old fan from Barre, Vt., attended Friday's practice and Sunday's game, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Merchant spoke to the team after practice and seemed to remind them what it's all about.

"I told them to go out and play like world champs," he said, sitting at a locker next to defensive captain Justin Tuck.

When asked why he gave the message, he shot back:

"Because we really needed to go out and play like world champs."

Against the Packers, the Giants did.

Manning, who had not thrown a touchdown in three games, had scoring strikes of 16 yards to rookie Rueben Randle, 9 yards to Victor Cruz and 13 to Hakeem Nicks. The last one gave him 200 for his career, breaking the team record held by Phil Simms.

"The thing I'm most proud of tonight is the way we played and getting a win," said Manning, who was 16 of 30 for 249 yards. "This was a big game, we needed to come out and play well and get a win. We finally got back to playing offense, defense, special teams, all of us playing at a high level, playing as a team, and hopefully we can build off of this momentum."

Everybody seemed to contribute. Ahmad Bradshaw ran 13 yards for a touchdown and went 59-yards with a screen pass to set up Andre Brown's 2-yard TD run on the opening drive.

The defense sacked Rodgers five times and set up 10 points with Corey Webster's pick leading to Lawrence Tynes' field goal and Osi Umenyiora's strip-sack and Jason Pierre-Paul's 10-yard return setting up Bradshaw's TD run that gave New York a 31-10 lead.

The 31 points were the most scored by the Giants in a half this season, and it pretty much decided the game.

The only negative was Brown broke his left leg in the second half and his season looks done.

The Packers were done before that, at as far as this game.

"I think this is a game that makes everybody look inside and find out what you're about," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I haven't felt like this since the first game I coached as a Green Bay Packers head coach. Beaten very thoroughly tonight. It doesn't taste good. It doesn't feel good."

Rodgers got Green Bay off to a great start, connecting with Jordy Nelson on a 61-yard scoring pass on its first series. There was little else to celebrate in a game where he finished 14 of 25 for 219 yards, an interception and a lost fumble.

"You win five in a row and everyone is happy, but like I said last year during the run, there are things that go under the radar that need to be handled," Rodgers said "Sometimes it takes a loss. ... We need to remember this feeling and not have this kind of embarrassment happen again.

The Packers were missing such key starters as linebacker Clay Matthews, defensive back Charles Woodson and receiver Greg Jennings, and it showed as they were manhandled by the Giants for the second straight time. New York beat them 37-20 in the NFC semifinal, a game some Packers said they lost more than the Giants won.

This one, there was no doubt who was the better team.

"We went out there and proved it," Merchant said.

Manning was impressed with the way Merchant handled himself, saying players felt it was special that the youngster had one wish and chose to spend time with the Giants.

"He had the opportunity to come out and talk to the team, so Coach Coughlin does a great job and all the players do a great job of making him feel welcome and fired up," Manning said. "It can be kind of nerve-racking to come talk to your favorite team and have a little pep talk, but he did a great job and he said to go show everybody you're the world champions and why you're the world champions and play that way. I think it got everybody fired up and obviously we came out and played the way that we know we can."

The Giants never trailed after Manning's touchdown pass to Randle, the first of his career. Webster's interception set up Tynes' field goal for a 17-7 lead and Cruz capped a 61-yard drive early in the second quarter to push the lead to 24-7.

A short field goal by Mason Crosby got Green Bay within two touchdowns, but Umenyiora's forced fumble set up Bradshaw's TD run and the game was over by halftime.

NOTES: The Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips with a knee injury in the third quarter. He was making his first appearance since Week 4. ... Giants right tackle David Diehl sustained a stinger in the first half. ... Green Bay lost safety M.D. Jennings (rib), DE C.J. Wilson (knee), and RB Johnny White (concussion). ... Giants tight end Martellus Bennett caught a fan who leaned too far over the lower railing trying to grab a glove Bennett was giving a child after the game. The fan was arrested.

    Long Distance Relationships

Yeah, there's all the coding that needs to be done, designing for the most ergonomic machine for her (or him, depending) and much more. So yeah, it would probably be cheaper to fly out to wherever than buy one of these things when (and if) it is publicly available.

Well, all the pressure sensitivity wouldn't be too hard to accomplish, it's more so the designing that needs to be done. Still, an interesting thought.

    Man United back on top

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 12:04 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Manchester United fought back to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 on Saturday, provisionally reclaiming top spot while condemning the bottom-placed team to the worst start any Premier League side has made after 13 games.

New QPR manager Harry Redknapp was watching from the stands at Old Trafford as Jamie Mackie gave the London club hope of a first win of the season by scoring the opener.

But United responded with three goals in less than 10 minutes, leaving QPR roote to the bottom with just four points.

Jonny Evans pulled the hosts level before Darren Fletcher marked his first league start in a year with a goal and Javier Hernandez scored a third.

United went two points ahead of Manchester City, which is at Chelsea on Sunday.

Initially, QPR had a sense of purpose and stuck to its defensive duties with diligence, even though the visitors were assisted by the lackluster nature of United's display.

Stand-in manager Mark Bowen might even have had a goal to celebrate after Mackie converted an excellent cross from Djibril Cisse, only for the effort to be ruled out by a tight offside call going against him.

After successive defeats at Norwich and Galatasaray, United should have been ready to tear apart its weakened opponents, but made an ineffective start.

Danny Welbeck produced cut-backs from either flank for Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney but neither striker could hit the target, and Ashley Young also sliced the ball into the side-netting.

But United, just like in the last four matches, was the team to fall behind.

United failed to read a short corner and then couldn't prevent Kieron Dyer getting down the by-line. Then, after goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard had only been able to shove Dyer's low cross away from his goal, Mackie finished off in the 52nd minute.

Within minutes, Adel Taarabt had curled a free kick narrowly over Lindegaard's goal.

Ferguson took immediate action, hauling off Paul Scholes and Young in favor of Anderson and Javier Hernandez.

The change took a little while to have any discernible effect, but eventually, United was level through Evans. Prior to this season, the Northern Irishman had only scored one United goal. When he was on hand to turn home Welbeck's header from Rooney's corner, it was his third of the season.

If that goal was well received, the one Fletcher scored to put the hosts ahead from another corner triggered an emotional reaction from the Scottish midfielder.

It was Fletcher's first Premier League in 13 months, having spent most of the intervening period battling against a chronic bowel complaint that threatened his career.

Hernandez was soon tucking home his ninth of the season as QPR showed their brittle side again, completing a woeful nine-minute spell which underlined why they are in so much trouble.

Birdlike dinos had tough time flying

Some of the first birdlike creatures to emerge during the age of the dinosaurs probably couldn't get their heavy wings to take them off the ground, and they likely opted for gliding over flying, new research shows.

Modern flying birds have a single primary layer of easily separated long feathers covered with short ones ? a design that helps them overcome drag when taking flight. A new analysis of the fossils of two of their ancestors shows that the arrangement of feathers for primitive birds was quite different.

The birdlike dinosaurs Anchiornis huxley and Archaeopteryx lithographica had dense overlapping layers of wing feathers that were likely difficult to separate, the researchers found. Instead of lifting off from the ground, these creatures probably climbed trees and used their wings to glide from a height, the scientists said.

      1. Climate issue heats up after superstorm

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The climate change issue has been virtually a non-issue during the presidential campaign ? but it's primed to take a higher profile after the elections, in part due to Hurricane Sandy's horrific aftermath.

      4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

What's more, differences in the wing feathers of Archaeopteryx and Anchiornis appear to represent early evolutionary experiments in wing design, according to the researchers. For example, Archaeopteryx had multiple layers of long feathers, while Anchiornis had an abundance of simple feathers that overlapped like a penguin's, said study researcher Nicholas R. Longrich, a postdoctoral fellow at Yale.

Longrich's colleague Jakob Vinther, a former Yale doctoral student, now with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, said the fossil analyses add to an intricate picture of how feathers and modern birds evolved.

"We now seem to see that feathers evolved initially for insulation," Vinther explained in a statement. "More complex vaned or pinnate feathers evolved for display. These display feathers turned out to be excellent membranes that could have been utilized for aerial locomotion, which only very late in bird evolution became what we consider flapping flight."

The research was detailed today (Nov. 21) online in the journal Current Biology.

Halle Berry's ex arrested after fight at her house

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Halle Berry's ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry was arrested for investigation of battery Thursday after he and the Oscar-winning actress's current boyfriend got into a fight at her Hollywood Hills home, police said.

Aubry, 37, was booked for investigation of a battery, a misdemeanor, and released on $20,000 bail, according to online jail records. He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 13.

Aubry came to Berry's house Thanksgiving morning and police responded to a report of an assault, said Los Angeles Police Officer Julie Boyer. Aubry was injured in the altercation and was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Emails sent to Berry's publicist, Meredith O'Sullivan, and Aubry's family law attorney, Gary Fishbein, were not immediately returned.

Berry and Aubry have been involved in a custody dispute involving their 4-year-old daughter, Nahla. The proceedings were sealed because the former couple are not married. Both appeared in the case as recently as Nov. 9, but neither side commented on the outcome of the hearing.

Berry has been dating French actor Olivier Martinez, and he said earlier this year that they are engaged.

Acupressure more effective than physical therapy

    Summary:
Those of us committed to the holistic approach have long been satisfied of the benefits of alternative therapy. Recent studies recommend & confirm a bias towards this hands on approach.

When this energy is blocked or deficient, disease can result. These energy disruptions are often the result of stress or injury. It is believed that acupressure causes the brain to release endorphins. Endorphins play an important role in immune function, pain relief, stress reduction, & slowing the aging method.

    Article Body:
All of us know Acupressure has been around for some five,000 years now & those of us involved in Holistic & wellness stay satisfied that the procedures encompassed within this sphere are more efficacious than physical therapy. Every living being has a life force, or energy, called qi or chi (pronounced ?chee?). When this energy, which runs along meridians, is in balance & flowing freely, the body is in a state of health. Acupoints tap in to the the major energy pathways of the body

most low back pain researchers the results are still significant & relevant. In February 2006 a randomized controlled trial took place at The National Taiwan University in Taipei.

Lower back pain has long been the bain of the modern world not only in lost man hours but also because of the numerous side effects, complications & nuances of lower back pain complaints. Further studies now confirm the benefits of acupressure over physical therapy. Albeit that the studies failed to take in to consideration functional status & disability as recommended by

Compared with physical therapy, acupressure was associated with an 89% reduction in significant disability & that improvement was maintained at 6-month follow-up. Study limitations include a confounding psychological effect of therapy; loss of 15.5% of patients to follow-up at 6 months & effectiveness of any modification therapy dependent on the therapist?s process & experience.

129 patients with chronic low back pain received acupressure or physical therapy for one month. Primary endpoints were self-administered Chinese versions of standard outcome measures for low back pain (Roland & Morris disability questionnaire) at baseline, after treatment, & at 6-month follow-up. After treatment, the mean total Roland & Morris disability questionnaire score was significantly lower in the acupressure group than in the physical therapy group irrespective of the difference in absolute score or mean change from baseline.

On a more lighter note Acupressure has also been cited as a new aid for sleepy students. 39 student volunteers found that those who were taught to self-administer acupressure to stimulation points on their legs, feet, hands & heads were less likely to drowse in the coursework of class. The acupressure consisted of light tapping of fingers or using thumbs or forefingers to lightly massage the stimulation points. It was conceded that more study is necessary in relation to acupressure & the effect on human alertness.

Participants were aged 18 to 81 years. Exclusion criteria were pregnancy & contraindication to acupressure. 64 patients were randomized to acupressure & 65 to physical therapy. Conclusive or inconclusive the results still point towards the unquestionable & positive aspects of acupressure & holistic healing.

Looking further in to the positives might this self administered acupressure even be a consideration for babies with ADHD contra Ritalin!

(or are you married to) A - National Association of Baby Boomer ...

    By Jed Diamond, Ph.D., LCSW

    NABBW?s Male Menopause Expert

After writing, The Irritable Male Syndrome: Understanding and Managing the 4 Key Causes of Depression and Aggression, I received hundreds of letters from women and men concerned about the impact that irritability and anger were having in their lives. Many of which are about either being or married to a depressed husband. This one is typical of the many I received:

?Last month a man came home from work with my husband?s face but he did not act at all like the man I married. I?ve known this man for 30 years, married 22 of them and have never met this guy before. Angry, nasty, and cruel are just a few words to describe him. He used to be the most upbeat, happy person I knew. Now he?s gone from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. In spite of how he treats me I still love my husband and want to save our marriage. Please, can you help me??

We all get irritable and angry at times, but Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) has deeper roots. In the book I describe a number of key symptoms of IMS, including hypersensitivity.

The women who live with these men say things like the following:

I feel like I have to walk on eggshells when I?m around him.

I never know when I?m going to say something that will set him off.

He?s like a time bomb ready to explode but I never know when.

    Nothing I do pleases him.

The men don?t often recognize their own hypersensitivity. Rather, their perception is that they are fine but everyone else is going out of their way to irritate them. The guys say things like:

    Quit bothering me.
    Leave me alone.
    No, nothing?s wrong. I?m fine.
Or they don?t say anything. They increasingly withdraw into a numbing silence.

Does this sound familiar? If you think someone you love may be suffering from IMS, take this simple quiz to find out.

Think back over the last month. How often have you (or your man) appeared :

    Rarely (1) Sometimes (2) Often (3)

    Grumpy
    Jealous
    Gloomy
    Impatient
    Tense
    Hostile
    Lonely
    Stressed out
    Annoyed
    Touchy

Please add the numbers and compute your score which can range from 10 to 30.

    Results:

10-15. This guy is on a pretty even keel.

16-22. He can be a bear to live with at times.

23-30. You?ve got a man who suffers from Irritable Male Syndrome which could lead to depression or aggression if not treated.

If you need immediate help please contact me with your specific concerns. You may also find my books and blog posts valuable.

What has been your experience with IMS? What have you done that has helped? What questions do you have that we can explore together?

Please share your comments and questions below.

    Together we heal.
