Costa cruise ship stranded in pirate waters near the Seychelles
Costa Allegra, a cruise ship with 1,000 people on board, had a fire in the engine room. The cruise ship, stranded in Somali pirate waters, is now being towed to the Seychelles.
?A crippled cruise ship owned by the same company as the capsized Costa Concordia was being towed by a French tuna fishing boat on Tuesday to Seychelles' main island, the liner's owner said.
Skip to next paragraphAn engine room fire on the Costa Allegra knocked out the ship's main power supply, leaving it adrift with more than a thousand people on board in waters vulnerable to pirate attacks.
Costa Cruises said an earlier plan to tow the vessel to the nearest island of Desroches had been aborted because security conditions for mooring the ship and offloading the passengers and crew "would not have been assured".

Two tugs were approaching the cruise ship to assist the Seychelles-based tuna purse-seiner Trevignon pulling the Costa Allegra, which is now due to arrive at the main island Mahe on Thursday morning.
"Helicopters will ensure continuous supply of food, comfort items, flashlights in order to mitigate guests' discomfort given the difficult conditions on board," Costa Cruises spokesman Davide Barbano said in a statement.
An evacuation off Desroches Island would have presented the ship owner and local authorities with a tricky and expensive logistical operation.
The 636 passengers and 413 crew would have had to use the ship's lifeboats to land on the exclusive coral-fringed island, where Prince William and his then girlfriend, Kate Middleton, stayed a few years ago.
Ferries or a fleet of small private planes would most likely then have shuttled the passengers to Mahe.
"Logistics and hotels on the island are not enough. It would require ... an immediate transfer from Desroches to Mahe," Barbano said.
ARMED GUARDS
Seychelles authorities still face a logistical headache finding accommodation in Mahe for all those onboard.
"Right now we are in consultation with the hotels on Mahe to find out how many beds are available. It's a busy time of year," Srdjana Janosevic, spokeswoman for the Seychelles presidency, told Reuters.
The giant Costa Concordia capsized on Jan. 13 after hitting rocks off the Italian island of Giglio, killing at least 25 people. Divers and rescue workers are still searching for the bodies of seven missing people.
The much smaller, 29,000-tonne Costa Allegra was sailing some 200 miles southwest of Seychelles when the fire broke out and it sent a distress signal, the company said.
The fire was put out and there was light onboard thanks to an emergency battery but no air conditioning or cooking facilities.
The passengers are from 25 different nations, including four children, with the largest contingents being 127 from France and 126 from Italy. There are 38 Germans, 31 Britons, 13 Canadians and eight Americans on board.
Seychelles is an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar with a population of just over 80,000. The Costa Allegra left Diego Suarez in Madagascar on Saturday and had been due to dock in Mahe on Tuesday.
It is being protected by nine members of an "anti-pirate" unit of the Italian navy, a precaution regularly taken on ships in the Indian Ocean which is prone to attacks by Somali pirates.
While yachts have been seized in the past near Seychelles, Somali pirates have yet to successfully hijack a cruise liner in the Indian Ocean.
"The ship is not in a high-risk area, but we can't be 100 percent sure," said Costa Cruises' Giorgio Moretti.
Seas in the area were moderate with winds gusting at 25 knots, the Italian coastguard said in a statement.
Shares of Costa Cruises' parent company Carnival were down 0.54 percent at 1,831 pence at 1205 GMT.
Costa was accused by some passengers of long delays and a lack of organisation in the evacuation of the Costa Concordia.
That vessel's Italian captain is under house arrest near Naples accused of multiple manslaughter and abandoning the ship.

Install weather stripping. Weather stripping and door sweeps can prevent drafts that make the home feel colder in the winter. There are several types of weather stripping available and most can be easily installed by the homeowner.
Consider window upgrades. Older single paned windows are energy wasters. There are several options to upgrade the windows to a double-glazed or even a triple-glazed window. In addition, in homes where double-glazed windows are installed, if moisture collects inside the windows, they have lost their seal and less efficient than they could be. It may be time to replace the existing windows with newer ones.
Have the HVAC system serviced regularly. Homeowners can change filters regularly, but for peak efficiency, the unit needs to be maintained. Every year a system is not maintained, it becomes less efficient. A HVAC contractor can perform the necessary maintenance to ensure that the unit is working at top efficiency.
Consider installing a new HVAC system. There have been great strides toward higher energy efficiency in the past ten years. In many instances, installing a new system will pay for itself in a couple of years due to the energy savings made possible. In homes that do not currently have a central forced air unit, there are options to maintain the temperature of the home that do not require installing ducts.

Iran launches new military exercises (AP)
TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran began ground military exercises Saturday and defiantly warned that it could cut off oil exports to "hostile" European nations as tensions rise over suggestions that military strikes are an increasing possibility if sanctions fail to rein in the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
Tehran has stepped up its rhetoric as international pressure mounts over allegations that it is seeking to develop atomic weapons, a charge it denies.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued stern warnings against any possible U.S. or Israeli attacks against Tehran's nuclear facilities. Western forces also have boosted their naval presence in the Gulf led by the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
The new military maneuvers came weeks after Iran rolled out its troops and arsenals in an unprecedented display of military readiness, with 10 days of naval maneuvers that included the first threats to block Gulf oil tankers in early January. Ground forces also were sent on winter war games ? against what a Tehran military spokesman called a "hypothetical enemy" ? with U.S. forces just over the border in Afghanistan.
Plans for new Iranian naval games in the Persian Gulf off the country's southern coast have been in the works for weeks.
Iranian state media reported the ground maneuvers of the elite Revolutionary Guard started Saturday near Jiroft, 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran. No more details were available, but it appeared that they were small-scale exercises and not linked to the planned major naval maneuvers near the Strait of Hormuz, the route for one-fifth of the world's crude oil.
Iranian officials and lawmakers repeatedly have threatened to close the strait, which funnels down to a waterway no wider than 30 miles (50 kilometers) at the mouth of the Gulf, in retaliation for sanctions that affect Iran's oil exports. But they have as yet made no attempts to disrupt shipping through the waterway, and the U.S. and other Western powers have warned they would respond swiftly to any attempts at a blockade.
Washington and its allies fear Iran could use its uranium enrichment labs ? which make nuclear fuel ? to eventually produce weapons-grade material. Tehran insists it only seeks reactors for energy and medical research.
So far, the West is relying primarily on the threat of economic sanctions to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.
Tehran has claimed that the most recent move ? EU sanctions approved on Jan. 23, which include an oil embargo and the freezing of central bank assets ? will be ineffective, while members of Iran's parliament say they have drafted a bill which would cut off the flow to Europe early, before it can find alternative suppliers.
Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi also said Saturday the Islamic Republic would "definitely" cut off oil to "hostile" European countries, without specifying which ones they were.
However, he said Iran is moving toward reducing reliance on oil revenues, a hint that Tehran is preparing for the worst. Oil sales account for about 80 percent of Iran's foreign revenues.
Qassemi, the oil minister, reiterated Iran's argument that the EU oil embargo will not cripple Iran's economy, claiming that the country already has identified new customers to replace the loss in European sales that accounted for about 18 percent of Iran's exports.
"We've made the necessary planning to deal with that. We have friends in the world and will assist each other," he said. "We won't back down a single step under political pressures and won't give up our right position even if we can't sell a single barrel of oil."
In contrast, he said, the ban would rebound on oil consumers.
"If Iran's oil is totally deleted from the market, then a terrible tension will be created. The costs will be intolerable. The option of imposing a total ban on Iran's crude exports is unenforceable," he said.
Qassemi also reinforced Iran's warning to Saudi Arabia and other fellow OPEC members against boosting production to offset any potential drop in Tehran's crude exports, saying the cartel should not be used as a political weapon against a member state.
Israel, for its part, has so far publicly backed the efforts by the U.S. and European Union for tougher sanctions that target Iran's oil exports. But Israeli leaders have urged even harsher measures and warn that military action remains a clear option despite Western appeals to allow time for the economic pressures and isolation to bear down on Iran.
Khamenei, in a nationally broadcast speech on Friday, staked out a hard line after suggestions by Israel that military strikes are an increasing possibility if sanctions fail to rein in Iran's nuclear program.
He pledged to aid any nation or group that challenges Israel and said any military strikes would damage U.S. interests in the Middle East "10 times" more than they would hurt Iran. The comments also may signal that Tehran's proxy forces ? led by Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah ? could be given the green light to revive attacks on Israel as the showdown between the rivals intensifies.

Hackers apparently hit Swedish government site
STOCKHOLM?? A group linked to the hacker network Anonymous on Saturday said it had attacked the Swedish government's website, bringing it down for periods of time by overloading it with traffic.
CyberForce used Twitter to claim responsibility, saying "We have succeeded in the attack against the government."
It also indicated it may launch more attacks at around midnight (2300 GMT) Saturday, saying "this op starts at 24.00," but it was not immediately clear who the targets for those attacks may be.
The group said it had used a denial of service attack against the government, which essentially swamps a website with false users.
Government spokesman Jacob Lagercranser confirmed the website ? used by all departments of Sweden's government ? had experienced some problems, but he declined to give further details, saying the government never comments on security issues.
"Periodically we've experienced some problems in getting in on it. We're working on the problems," he said. The site was up and running again later Saturday.
CyberForce describes itself as part of the hacking collective Anonymous, which drew international attention by hacking onto a private conference call by the FBI and Britain's Scotland Yard, then publishing the roughly 15-minute-long recording of the call on the Internet on Friday.
In the past week, Saboteurs have stolen passwords and sensitive information on tipsters while hacking into the websites of several law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The alleged Swedish attack, launched at around midday local time, coincided with protests in Stockholm and Sweden's second largest city Goteborg, demonstrating against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA.
In a tweet, CyberForce suggested the attack could be linked to those protests, saying "we're not protesting on the (street), we're protesting on the Internet."
ACTA is a far-reaching agreement that aims to harmonize international standards on protecting the rights of those who produce music, movies, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and a range of other products that often fall victim to intellectual property theft.
