Space shuttle Discovery begins final flight

The nation's oldest space shuttle is being flown to its new home at the Smithsonian museum outside Washington, D.C. Tuesday.

After three decades of space service, NASA's oldest and most traveled shuttle, Discovery, began its new life as a museum relic Tuesday with one final takeoff.

Discovery departed Florida's Kennedy Space Center at daybreak Tuesday aboard a modified jumbo jet bound for Washington, where it will become a Smithsonian exhibit.

Nearly 2,000 people ? former shuttle workers, VIPs, tourists and journalists ? gathered along the old shuttle landing strip to see Discovery off. A cheer went up as the plane taxied down the runway and soared into a clear sky.

The plane and shuttle headed south and made one last flight over the beaches of Cape Canaveral ? thousands jammed the shore for a glimpse of Discovery ? then returned to the space center in a final salute. Cheers erupted once more as the pair came in low over the runway it had left 20 minutes earlier and finally turned toward the north.

A similar flyover was planned over the monuments in the nation's capital, later in the morning.

Discovery ? the fleet leader with 39 orbital missions ? is the first of the three retired space shuttles to head to a museum. It will go on display at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, taking the place of the shuttle prototype Enterprise. The Enterprise will go to New York City.

Endeavour will head to Los Angeles this fall. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy.

NASA ended the shuttle program last summer after a 30-year run to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit. Private U.S. companies hope to pick up the slack, beginning with space station cargo and then, hopefully, astronauts. The first commercial cargo run, by Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is set to take place in just another few weeks.

For at least the next three to five years ? until commercial passenger craft are available in the United States ? NASA astronauts will have to hitch multimillion-dollar rides on Russian Soyuz capsules to get to the International Space Station.

Touchpad Free adds Windows 8 gestures to its WP7 app

Touchpad Free adds Windows 8 gestures to its WP7 app

There's no shortage of apps that let you use your mobile phone as a touchpad for your computer, but Touchpad Free is the first we've heard of that adds explicit support for Windows 8 gestures. The remote pointer app should allow your Mango-powered device to play nice with that preview copy of Win 8 you've been running since it hit the web, complete with the multitouch gestures that are key to navigating the metro interface. To get it up and running you'll have to install a small server app on your PC which you can find at the source. Follow the second source link and you'll come upon Touchpad Free itself. Neat huh? Well, what are you waiting for, go check it out.

MP3 song-searching can increase risk for drivers

Monday, April 16, 2012

Consumers are increasingly using MP3 players in their vehicles, and auto makers have responded: Data show that 90% of new vehicles sold in the United States have MP3 connectivity. Makers of aftermarket MP3 controllers are also responding with devices that have claimed to decrease driver distraction. But according to human factors/ergonomics researcher John D. Lee and colleagues, MP3 players might increase distraction risk, depending on which devices drivers use and how long they look away from the road while searching for their favorite song. Aftermarket devices designed to reduce distraction can actually increase it.

In Lee et al.'s article, "Scrolling and Driving: How an MP3 Player and Its Aftermarket Controller Affect Driving Performance and Visual Behavior," published in Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 50 drivers age 18 to 25 searched for specific songs in playlists of varying lengths using either an MP3 player or an aftermarket controller. They performed this task in a driving simulator while negotiating varying road segments with frequent changes in traffic patterns and construction activity. In comparison trials they were asked to tune the radio to a particular frequency while driving.

Lee and colleagues found that drivers who searched through long playlists (580 songs) glanced away from the road more frequently and for longer durations than did those scrolling through shorter playlists, resulting in degraded driving performance. The aftermarket controller was found to lengthen, not shorten, glances away from the road. "As seen in this study, these aftermarket devices do not always have the expected effect," Lee noted.

These results are significant because they bring yet another dimension to the driver distraction challenge. The most recent figures from the U.S. Department of Transportation indicate that, despite the numerous education campaigns and laws aimed at mitigating driver distraction, the problem may actually be getting worse.

"New technology in the car often seems like familiar old technology, such as a radio, but is often much more likely to distract," said Lee. "A simple task of selecting a song from a list can seduce you into looking away from the road longer than you might have intended, and long looks away from the road can kill."

Which came last, the dinosaur or the egg?

Scientists unearthed remains of a new kind of dinosaur and its eggs in Patagonia recently. The fossil find provides fresh clues to the past.

New evidence suggests that mama dinosaur likely perished at the same time as her eggs.

Researchers in Patagonia recently found skeletal remains of a newly designated genus of dinosaur ? Bonapartenykus ??near two broken eggshells. Examinations of the bones and eggs suggest that they may have been inside the creature at the time of her death.?

"So it looks like we have indirect evidence for keeping two eggs in two oviducts," Kundr?t told LiveScience. "They were close to being laid, but the female didn't make it."

Or maybe not. Other information gathered from shards of eggshells discovered later indicates that some of the eggs had been incubated, and therefore contained embryos at an advanced stage of development. In other words, some of the eggs may have been in the nest, not in the dinosaur.

Though the location of the eggs at the time of the mother's death remains uncertain, the 70-million-year-old fossils hold several more clues to the past.

The remains are from the birdlike dino which belonged to a group of dinosaurs known as the Alvarezsauridae. It's known as Bonapartenykus ultimus, named in honor of Jos? Bonaparte, discoverer of the first alvarezsaurid in Patagonia in 1991.

Measuring eight and a half feet long, it was one of the largest members of the family.?The feathered bipeds possessed birdlike skulls, small jaws with teeth, and strong but short arms that ended with a?sizable claw.

The eggs found with the mother's remains are unique, so researchers designated a new type of dinosaur egg?called Arraigadoolithidae,?named for Alberto Arraigada?the owner of the site where the specimen was discovered.

When Kundr?t, a dinosaur expert from Uppsala University in Sweden, examined the eggshells, he noticed what "turned out to be the first evidence of fungal contamination of dinosaur eggs."

Kundr?t told LiveScience of his discovery, "It looks like at the very late stage the eggs could suffer from the same contamination as in common birds."

These findings will be published in the June 2012 edition of the journal Cretaceous Research. The article is available online now.

1. Do simple exercises. Aim for an exercise routine that lasts for at least 30 minutes per session. You don?t have to perform rigorous workouts; even walking and doing household chores will do. You can do some gardening, wash your car, mow the lawn, scrub the floor, and the like. Do this at least 3-4 times a week, or better yet daily to make your body more immune to hypertension.

2. Choose an activity that you really enjoy. Sometimes the thought of having to exercise every day can be intimidating that many people simply prefer to forgo it. But exercising doesn?t really have to be hard and boring! To encourage you from doing this healthy activity, simply choose an exercise that?s easy and fun. You can go for your favorite sports or hobbies such as like playing tennis, rowing, biking, hiking, and so on. Even walking around the mall can be beneficial to your health. The key is to find something that you really love to do is that exercising won?t seem like work.

3. Start a slower pace. If you haven?t exercised in a long while, it?s best to start at a slower speed so as not to shock your body and cause injuries. The very first day you begin your routine, try walking for 10-15 minutes. Once your body gets used to the process, you may increase your speed and duration to 30 minutes or more a day.

4. Warm up and cool down. Don?t forget to warm up before exercising and cool down afterwards. These two processes are important in high blood pressure prevention since they can help condition your body for exercise and lessen the soreness you may feel by the end of your sessions.

5. Breathe properly. Be sure to breathe deeply and properly to let fresh air circulate within your body. Don?t hold in your breath while you exercise as that can rapidly increase your blood pressure levels.

6. Observe your body?s reaction. If your body responds well to your workout routines, then that means it?s really effective for you. But when you experience dizziness, chest discomforts and lack of breath often, then you need to stop right away; there may be something going on in your body that you?re not aware of. To avoid harmful complications, always ask your doctor whether exercising is ideal for your given health condition.
