Biology-inspired designs showcased in exhibit 'Learning from Organisms' on Jan. 24

Visualize this ASU classroom: a dark green Panamanian tropical jungle. Light filters through a dense thicket of leaves. A sloth moves overhead so slowly that a leaf nearby spins unscathed for minutes before three elongate toes reach for it. Monkey poop, parrot feathers and leaf matter rain down, startling brilliant butterflies into flight. Leaf-cutter ants teem on the decaying forest floor alongside six teams of students from ASU's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and the School of Life Sciences.

What brings them to this rich, biodiverse environment? The graduate students are partners in the traveling studio program developed by The Design School at ASU, which journeyed to Gamboa, Panama, to collaborate with the program's partner, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

The process of taking processes from nature and applying them to address human needs is known as biomimicry. The students' assignment was to create biomimetic architectural and product-design concepts for a scientific field station on the Gigante Peninsula, a remote spit of land located in the Panama Canal Zone.

And create they did. Fourteen biomimetic products were developed by the students, some of which form the core of an exhibit "Learning from Organisms" opening at 11:15 a.m., Jan. 24, in the Life Sciences Building C-lobby.

"Adaptions of species inspire solutions to human problems," says Philip White, one of the studio's instructors. White is an associate professor and ecological design strategist whose focus, besides teaching, is the development of ecologically intelligent products and systems. "This training environment is so exciting because it is a real site, with real needs and real-world constraints. Developing a Smithsonian field station emphasizes believable and feasible, not just theoretical and conceptual."

The challenge of designing permanent structures on the Gigante Peninsula in Panama tests architects on multiple fronts, says White. Buildings are subject to insect infestations and periodic flooding. Obtaining sunlight for solar power and room lighting, as well as capturing cross breezes for natural cooling, requires destructive cutting of openings in the forest canopy. Such design challenges are what engaged architectural student Adam Tate's interest. Tate developed plans for a mobile research laboratory built on a floating pontoon structure, with joints and springs modeled after elements of the trap-jaw ant.

The exhibit will showcase Tate's design, along with a backpack inspired by the musculoskeletal structure of the three-toed sloth, an umbrella derived from bats, which will resist wind torsion, and a design for a photovoltaic canopy based on lobster eyes - perfect for the challenges of the low light environment of the jungle. The posters will be on display through Feb. 9.

"The more uncertainty there is, the more freedom there is for new ideas," says architect Michael Rotondi, an architecture professor in the course. "The beauty of this experience in Panama is that typically designers go into a challenge with preconceived notions, drawing from what they know. Working with other students and thinking creatively outside of their areas of training spurred invention and problem-solving."

However, it wasn't just architects and designers who developed products based on their experience. The interactive cross-disciplinary discussions, visits with Smithsonian scientists and interactions with ASU instructors, which included White, biologist Rick Overson and Heidi Fischer, coordinator of InnovationSpace, also had doctoral biology students Elizabeth Cash and Clint Penick reaching for their design notebooks.

Scientists at ASU have been using concepts of biomimicry in various studies across the campuses. For example, Ana Moore and Thomas Moore, both Regents' Professors at ASU in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, have work that is funded by the National Science Foundation to use bio-inspired approaches to improve solar energy conversion. One of their projects is a photovoltaic cell that utilizes design concepts drawn from photosynthesis in leaves. Scientists Jeff Yarger and Gregory Holland also are deconstructing the molecular makeup of spider silk hoping to create stronger, light-weight materials, such as bulletproof vests and artificial tendons.

Combining graduate curricula to encompass biology, design and architecture is the newest outgrowth of institutional investments advanced through an ASU-Smithsonian partnership forged by Robert Page, vice provost and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in 2010. Darren Petrucci, director The Design School in the Herberger Institute, and Brian Smith, director of the School of Life Sciences, see this traveling studio classroom as the first of a number of classes, experiences, and, possibly, degree programs that they will partner on.

"Collaborating with The Design School in the Herberger Institute provides us with an exciting opportunity to apply biological principles to functional design," Smith says. "And this relationship will provide our students with career options which expand well beyond biology."

"ASU is in the unique position to become a leader in biomimetic design by leveraging its top-tier programs in a collaborative relationship with some of the world's foremost experts in biological organisms," Petrucci says.

Report: Suspect in serial killings 'sick' after Iraq

Family members?of a man held in the killing of four homeless people say he is an Iraq War veteran who was distraught after combat, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

An uncle said?Itzcoatl Ocampo of Yorba Linda had been telling relatives that he was seeing and hearing things, the Times said.

"When he came back from Iraq, he was sick," the uncle, Ifrain Gonzalez, told the Times.

Ocampo, 23,?was detained Friday night after a fourth homeless man was found slain in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant. The Times said bystanders had chased down?Ocampo about a quarter mile from the scene of the slaying.

Three other homeless men have been found stabbed to death in north Orange County since mid-December, and a task force of police officers, sheriff's deputies and FBI agents had been looking for the single suspect they believed was responsible for all three.

Brian Doyle, a friend from high school, told the Times that Ocampo told him he had been kicked out of the military. The Times said it could not confirm that.?

The Times reported that Gonzalez said Ocampo was born in Mexico and moved to California with his family when he was 1.

On?Saturday, mourners wept and placed flowers at the scene of death of the latest stabbing victim, who was described by friends as a Vietnam War veteran in his 60s named John.

Pharmacists' role in health reform (Politico)

How do we get patients ? especially those with chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension ? to take their medications faithfully?

Hundreds of billions of dollars are riding on the answer. Spending on prescription medicines in the U.S. annually amounts to $301 billion, about 10 percent of the nation?s total health care tab. But almost as much ? $290 billion ? is spent each year dealing with the medical effects of Americans not taking their drugs correctly, according to the New England Healthcare Institute.

Getting patients to comply with their prescriptions could significantly cut health care costs.

It won?t be easy. Consider that researchers offered heart-attack survivors a seemingly irresistible incentive to take their medicine: ?free? drugs with no co-payments. But the free drugs only modestly improved the survivors? adherence rates, according to a study published online recently in The New England Journal of Medicine. If free drugs don?t do much, what could make a more significant dent in the problem? Pharmacists could. But the federal government doesn?t recognize them ? unlike most other health care professional ? as providers, which minimizes their role in helping patients correctly take their medicine and squanders tens of billions of dollars in potential savings.

Research shows that if pharmacists played a treatment role in addition to filling prescriptions, they could considerably lower health care costs. At Kaiser Permanente Colorado, for example, pharmacists set out to help patients with coronary artery disease hit their blood pressure and cholesterol targets.

Working under physician-approved protocols, the pharmacists monitored drug therapies, adjusted dosages, ordered lab tests and added medications when needed. The results? An 89 percent reduction in patients? overall mortality and a nearly $22,000 annual savings in health care costs per patient, according to a 2007 study.

One of the largest physician-pharmacist collaboration projects is in Asheville, N.C. The city first hired pharmacists to work with its employees who had diabetes in 1997, seeking to improve their health and lower treatment costs.

The results exceeded expectations. From 1997 to 2001, the city reported that annual direct medical costs per worker dropped, on average, by $1,200 to $1,872. The city has since expanded the project to cover other chronic diseases, including hypertension and asthma. It saves an estimated $4 for every $1 invested.

These kinds of improved health outcomes and cost savings could become more widespread if Congress changed provider law to make the expanded services performed by the pharmacists at Kaiser and in Asheville part of standard health insurance coverage.

The training today?s pharmacists undergo qualifies them for provider status. They must complete a four-year postgraduate program focused on managing complex medications ? more than 10,000 prescription drugs and counting ? that are central to today?s drug treatments.

This knowledge is increasingly in demand. Already, more than half all Americans have one or more chronic diseases, and for 90 percent of them medications are the first-line of treatment. Health experts expect chronic-disease rates to rise as the population grays.

Yes, allowing pharmacists to play a treatment role in patient care, and collect fees for doing it, may initially increase medical costs. But over time, as the Asheville project demonstrates, it saves money.

When you factor in improved patient adherence to prescribed drug regimens because of regular pharmacist oversight, overall savings could be significant.

The Affordable Care Act offers an opportunity to put new pressure on Congress. Under the health care law, every plan sold on the new insurance exchanges will be required to cover a set of ?essential health benefits,? like physician services and hospitalizations. The Department of Health and Human Services and the individual states are to decide the definition of those benefits. Making pharmacist-supervised medication management an essential benefit would help bring our health care system into the 21st century.

Winner in satellite image contest

An image of the ribbon-like Rakaia river in New Zealand has won an online vote for one company's best satellite image of 2011.

The river, shown in March 2011, runs for about 150km to the Pacific.

Commercial satellite imaging firm DigitalGlobe invited Facebook users to choose its best image of last year.

The picture of the twisting river beat other striking images of Ground Zero in New York, and Palm Island, Dubai, to claim the top spot.

Another satellite imaging company, GeoEye, has also published a 2012 calendar made up of its top images from last year.

DigitalGlobe encouraged users to vote on 20 of its images from last year. This was whittled down to five at the beginning of January; the winner has just been announced.

In addition to the photos of Ground Zero and Palm Island, the original choices included a satellite photo showing the space shuttle Atlantis being moved out of its assembly building in Florida for its final mission.

GeoEye's images include a photo of unusual, tree-like sedimentary formations in the Gulf off Qatar and a shadow cast on the ground by the Gateway Arch in St Louis, Missouri, which is the biggest manmade structure in the US.

A French high-resolution imaging satellite, named Pleiades, was launched in December. Its manufacturers are expecting it to go head to head with both GeoEye and DigitalGlobe in the satellite imaging market.

God and Sports: Does Tebow Have a Prayer Against Brady? (LiveScience.com)

Whether or not you believe in divine intervention in sports ? and a recent survey suggests that about 40 percent of Americans do ? prayer may help athletes like football player Tim Tebow win on game day.

That's because praying can help focus athletes, calming them when they need to relax and pumping them up when they need energy and motivation, said Daniel Czech, a professor of exercise psychology who researches sports and spirituality. And while outsiders might question the concept of asking for divine intervention in a sporting match, Czech said athletes rarely pray for a win.

"I've never interviewed an athlete that prays for victory," Czech said. "It's more, 'God, help me accept the outcome.'"

Religion and sports

Religion and sports go hand-in-hand in America, with prayers as a common pre-game ritual. Denver Broncos quarterback Tebow is especially vocal about his faith, starring in an anti-abortion ad put out by Christian group Focus on the Family during the 2010 Super Bowl. (Tebow's mother fell ill during her pregnancy with him but decided against an abortion.)

Tebow's tendency to pray while on the field has even triggered a national meme called "tebowing," in which people kneel in a prayerful position in odd and unusual spots.

The Broncos play the New England Patriots on Saturday (Jan. 14), and a new national poll finds that many Americans suspect that God has an interest in the outcome. According to a poll of 1,076 registered voters, weighted to be nationally representative, 43 percent of Americans who are aware of Tebow's success believe that divine intervention has played a role. Forty-two percent said it had not.

It's not surprising that Christians, at least, would assume that God involves himself in football, Czech told LiveScience.

"Stressing God and 'God will intercede' is a very important concept for many Christians," Czech said. "It's very interesting that they transfer the idea that God will intercede and divine inspiration will come to the Tebow situation."

Praying for performance

While fans may credit divine inspiration for Tebow's success, it's very likely that the quarterback isn't praying for victory himself. According to Czech's research on Christian elite athletes, prayers fall into four common themes. One, players pray to play to the best of their ability, no matter the outcome of the game. Second, they take a "God's will" mindset, praying that God's will be done whether they win or lose. [Life's Extremes: Atheists vs. Believers]

"It's almost a passivity, if you will, of giving up control of the outcome ? It's a process-oriented mindset," Czech said. That attitude may be helpful for players to relieve stress and to shore up self-confidence even in the face of loses, he said.

Players also pray to remain free from injury and to be beacons for Christianity, Czech said.

Prayer also contains a ritual aspect, Czech said, such as when a baseball player crosses himself before stepping up to the plate.

"Once they do that sign of the cross, it's almost like, 'I have protection, I have strength,'" he said.

The ritual can help players pump themselves up in a "I'm playing for Christ," way, Czech said, or it can soothe them when things get stressful.

"If you have two seconds to go, if you're in overtime like Tebow and everyone is yelling and screaming, maybe a prayer can calm you and get you back into that optimal zone," Czech said.
