Algeria unnerved by reported hostage killing | Morocco World News

ALGIERS, Sept 3, 2012 (AFP) -

The Algerian government came in for press criticism Monday after Islamic militants occupying northern Mali announced the execution of an Algerian diplomat, one of four being held hostage.

?Tyranny in the Sahel,? ran the headline of the French-language daily El Watan, commenting that ?the dramatic evolution of the hostage affair puts Algiers in a difficult situation.?

?Will the urgency of saving the three diplomats who are still alive force Algiers to review its position?? the paper asked.

The Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) said Algerian vice consul Tahar Touati was executed on Saturday morning after an ultimatum given to his government on August 24 to meet their demands expired.

?The life of the other hostages will soon be in danger if Algeria doesn?t listen to us,? Walid Abu Sarhaoui, president of the MUJAO council, told AFP.

?Algeria had the time to move negotiations along but did not want to. We executed the hostage on Saturday,? he said, adding that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had rejected a deal with MUJAO.

The government has barely commented on the claim, saying it was seeking to verify the reports, and insisting that ?contact with the kidnappers has not been broken.?

Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci told journalists on Monday that all information in the possession of the Algerian authorities about the reported execution had been made public.

The Ennahar newspaper said Touati?s family was told by the authorities that there was no proof he had been killed.

The kidnappers, who are a splinter group of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) that first surfaced a year ago, had threatened to kill the hostage after Algiers rejected its demands.

These included the release of three comrades arrested in southern Algeria last month, including Necib Tayeb, a senior member of AQIM, the jihadist network?s North Africa branch.

MUJAO claimed the April 5 kidnapping of seven Algerian diplomats from a consulate in the Malian town of Gao, one of a string of northern towns captured by the militants. Three of them were released in July.

The Algerian press seized on the implications of Saturday?s reported killing.

Another French-language daily, L?Expression, questioned Algeria?s involvement in what it called a ?dirty war,? while Le Soir d?Algerie said that, by executing a diplomat ?the MUJAO is pushing Algeria towards military intervention.?

Algeria has made the rejection of foreign military intervention a centrepiece of its diplomacy.

However, along with neighbouring Mauritania and Niger, the North African country is committed to military cooperation and intelligence-sharing aimed at containing the fallout from the Islamists? seizure of northern Mali in March.

And the MUJAO on Saturday captured the town of Douentza, their furthest position south and a step closer to the capital Bamako.

Given its own history of violent conflict with Islamist extremists, Algiers has also rejected the demands of the hostage-takers in Mali, instead championing an international anti-ransom campaign.

MUJAO demanded 15 million euros in May in return for freeing the Algerian diplomats, but then released three of them.

The Islamist militants abducted three European aid workers from a Sahrawi refugee camp in Tindouf, southwestern Algeria, in October last year, releasing them in July in exchange for three Islamists and an alleged ransom of 15 million euros.

They also claimed responsibility for two attacks in southern Algeria this year, on a police base in Tamanrasset in March that left 23 people wounded, and another in Ouargla in June that left one dead.

'Nexus 7 3G' rumored for launch within weeks

Android Central

Google and ASUS' Nexus 7 tablet has been met with considerable success over the past couple of months, but so far it's only been available with Wifi connectivity, with no cellular data option offered to consumers. But that may be about to change if the latest round of rumors from veteran mobile blog MoDaCo? are to be believed.

According to ?MoDaCo's? Paul O'Brien, a "very well-placed source" is saying that a "Nexus 7 3G" is indeed in the works, with a launch due in around six months time. Interestingly, such a launch timeframe could put the device up against Apple's 7-inch iPad (or 'iPad mini'), which is expected to be announced  on Sept. 12 and released in mid-October.

MoDaCo's source says there are "no other hardware changes," besides the addition of a cellular radio, and that territories for launch, as well as the exact release date, have ye to be confirmed. Pricing, too, remains unknown at this time, but Nexus 7 buyers can probably expect to pay a small premium over the Wifi-only version.

Would you be willing to fork out a little more for 3G connectivity on your Nexus 7? Let us know down in the comments!

Maldives warns ousted president to halt protests

The Maldives government on Sunday accused former president Mohamed Nasheed of "seeking to inflame" unrest in the island nation and said unruly protests by his supporters would no longer be tolerated.

Nasheed claimed he was forced out of power in February by a coup, but an international investigation last week concluded that he had resigned after a police and military mutiny and weeks of demonstrations against his leadership.

Since his fall, supporters of Nasheed have expressed their anger at regular protests in the island capital Male and have often clashed with police.

The new government, led by President Mohamed Waheed, said on Sunday that the protests must end after the investigation found that the transfer of power was legal and constitutional.

"Former president Nasheed whilst he has reluctantly accepted the findings of (the report) continues to call for and partake in violent demonstrations," the government said in a statement. "(He) is seeking to inflame the situation."

It added that Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party "should cease violent demonstrations and not encourage unruly mobs" and warned that the government would "no longer condone" the protests.

Minor clashes broke out on Thursday night in Male between MDP supporters and police after the Commonwealth-backed report into the "coup" allegations was released.

Its findings were welcomed by the United Nations and the United States.

The Maldives, a string of islands set in the Indian Ocean, is famed for its luxury tourism resorts but political upheavals and dire poverty have raised tensions among its 330,000 Sunni Muslims citizens.

Fiery Obama embarks on march to the Dem convention

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? President Barack Obama lampooned the just-completed Republican National Convention as better-suited to an era of black-and-white TV and " trickle-down, you're on your own" economics Saturday, and declared that Mitt Romney "did not offer a single new idea" to fix the economy.

"There was a lot of talk about hard truths and bold choices, but no one actually told you what they were," Obama said, chuckling, as he set out on a three-day tour of battleground states in the run-up to his own convention.

Yet even the site of Obama's convention, Charlotte, N.C., served as an unwelcome reminder to the Democrats of an economy so weak that it threatens his chances for re-election.

The president carried North Carolina in 2008, but the state's unemployment rate is pegged at 9.6 percent, well higher than the nation's 8.3 percent and tied with next-door South Carolina for fifth from the bottom.

Obama's convention opens Tuesday at the Time Warner Cable arena with evening speeches by first lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the keynote speaker.

The president will be nominated for a new term on Wednesday, when former President Bill Clinton also will speak. Vice President Joe Biden delivers his own acceptance speech the same evening.

Obama's prime-time acceptance speech, to be delivered at the outdoor Bank of America Stadium, caps the convention on Thursday night. Aides predict a capacity crowd will hear the speech at the site, which has a capacity of nearly 74,000 for football.

Democrats are taking their turn in the convention spotlight just days after the Republicans met in Tampa, Fla., to nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Romney for the White House and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to be vice president.

A parade of speakers in Tampa excoriated Obama's handling of the economy, which is struggling in the weakest recession recovery of the post-World War II era.

The economy has been the top-rated issue in opinion polls all year, and the president is eager to turn the focus onto Romney on that subject.

Republicans "will take us backwards," Obama said, to the age of "trickle-down, you're on your own" economics that begin with tax cuts for the rich but tax increases for the middle class.

The president made a brief detour to foreign policy in his speech.

"Gov. Romney had nothing to say about Afghanistan this week or the plans for the 33,000 troops who will have come home from the war by the end of this month," he said.

The Republican challenger "said ending the war in Iraq was tragic. I said we'd end that war and we did," Obama said.

Romney said late last year, in a veterans roundtable, "The precipitous withdrawal is unfortunate. It's more than unfortunate, I think it's tragic. It puts at risk many of the victories that were hard won by the men and women who served there."

Obama, pointing to successes, declared, "I said we'd take out bin Laden and we did."

His audience cheered the mention of the demise of the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, who was killed in his hideout in Pakistan by U.S. Navy SEALs last year. Obama ordered the raid, and even Republicans credit him for the decision.

Romney campaigned in Ohio during the day ? the opening of the college football season ? and proclaimed it was time the country had a winning season after years of a sluggish economy and high unemployment.

Referring to the number of jobless in the country, Romney told his own cheering crowd, "If you have a coach that's zero and 23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach."

He also pledged to cut the federal deficit and "get us on track for a balanced budget."

Yet Romney has yet to produce a budget for public inspection. Nor did he mention that, as chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan wrote a plan projecting the deficit would decline each year from 2013 through 2017 but then begin an inexorable rise again. Additionally, the federal debt is projected to rise each year, from a current level of nearly $16 trillion to an estimated $25 trillion at the end of 2022.

Obama made Iowa his first stop on what his campaign billed as "The Road to Charlotte." He told the crowd he did so "because it was you, Iowa, who kept us going when the pundits were writing us off."

There was another reason, as well.

Polls make the state one of eight or so battlegrounds where the election is most likely to be decided. The president carried Iowa in 2008, and in an indication of the struggle he now faces, he has been lavishing time on it in recent weeks. He spent three days in August on a bus tour that traversed the state from west to east.

He had a second Iowa stop during the day before flying to Colorado for a Sunday appearance before college students at the University of Colorado.

Obama's schedule for Monday includes an appearance in Toledo, Ohio, yet another battleground state, before a trip to Louisiana to inspect damage from Hurricane Isaac.

Romney visited Louisiana on Friday.

Television ratings for the final night of the Republican convention were lower than four years ago. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 30.3 million viewers watched Thursday night's coverage of Romney's acceptance speech. That was down by one-fourth from 2008, when John McCain spoke on the final night of the Republican gathering in St. Paul., Minn.

7 Deadly Weapons You Should Never Ever Make Out of Harmless Household Items [How To]

I write a lot about edgy, semi-dangerous scientific projects. So, I get a lot of suggestions from people who want to share their own ideas for risky home projects. I like the reader engagement, but four times out of five, the ideas are dumb, and borderline deadly. Listen to me: if it involves a pipe, match heads, and gasoline, I guarantee you, it's a bad idea.
