Funny Women Stun In Comedies Written By Other Funny Women

LOS ANGELES ? Call it The "Bridesmaids" Effect: Ever since the R-rated 2011 comedy became a runaway hit, taking in more than $280 million worldwide and earning Oscar nods for actress Melissa McCarthy and writers Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo, a rash of female-written comedies are enticing viewers with provocative new characters who are more like women we know.

The latest is "Pitch Perfect," written by "30 Rock" and "New Girl" scribe Kay Cannon and starring a cast of comediennes including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp and Brittany Snow. The musical comedy, which counts Elizabeth Banks among its producers, focuses on the competitive world of college a cappella. Full of music and laughs, the story centers on the Bellas, an all-female group of singing misfits.

"'Bridesmaids' I think opened up a door to allow women to show a bunch of different women in different ways of being funny. It was kind of like an arrival moment," Cannon said. "Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, they made it cool to be funny and to be embarrassed and to look a thousand different ways and show a bunch of different areas of their lives."

And they aren't the only ones. Diablo Cody opened doors and eyes with 2007's "Juno," which introduced a female protagonist who was sharp, endearing and facing real-life circumstances. The appeal was in her intelligence, not her sexuality, and moviegoers could relate. The film earned Cody an Academy Award for best screenplay and was also nominated for best picture, best director (Jason Reitman) and best actress (Ellen Page), plus took in more than $140 million at the box office.

Since then, women have been finding a voice in comedy more than ever before. This summer saw actresses Zoe Kazan and Rashida Jones pen interesting comedic characters to play in their own starring vehicles: "Ruby Sparks" and "Celeste and Jesse Forever," respectively. Lauren Miller and Katie Anne Naylon wrote about female friendship and entrepreneurial efforts (as phone-sex operators) in "For a Good Time, Call..." Playwright and director Leslye Headland also made her screenwriting debut this summer with "Bachelorette," an adaptation of her play that explores a group of New York girlfriends dealing with life questions when the first among them marries.

Women are also making comedic strides on TV. Elizabeth Meriwether created "New Girl," which earned five Emmy nods. Lena Dunham is the multi-hyphenate talent behind HBO's "Girls," which also earned a round of Emmy nods, including producing, writing, directing and acting honors for Dunham. Mindy Kaling of "The Office" wrote her way into a starring role on her new show, "The Mindy Project." Whitney Cummings helped create "2 Broke Girls." Then there's Chelsea Handler, who has written and produced "Chelsea Lately" since 2007.

"Really what you see in the last 10 years is ... this groundswell of female writers and sometimes female directors being accepted by the comedy community," said Headland. "And then you get to 2011, where `Bridesmaids' did something that's actually never been done, which is an R-rated, female-centric comedy that makes money."

Both Headland and Cannon, whose scripts were written before "Bridesmaids" was released, say the success of that film made it easier for them to get their movies made. Cannon, who is also an actress, initially turned to writing because she wasn't finding or getting the kind of roles she sought.

"I didn't necessarily always feel that what I was reading was how women actually talked, or it was an archetype I didn't fit," she said. "I wasn't going to be the prettiest ingnue or the character actress."

Fey's "30 Rock" character, Liz Lemon, is a new kind of character, Cannon said: A real woman who's really funny as she faces real-life challenges.

Headland says the new breed of funny female writers arose out of frustration, and feminism.

"These writers ... are adept at really expressing those characters and writing those stories because I'm assuming they're struggling with the same thing I am, which is: What's going to happen to us? And what do we want to say to the women before us and also the women coming up after us?" she said. "There are new problems with being a woman that no one's talked about. There are new dilemmas that are coming up that just haven't really quite been articulated."

Actresses such as Kendrick, Snow, Wilson and others say these new female-created characters look and sound more like actual women they know.

"There's something to women writing for themselves, women writing for women, that just feels a lot more honest and therefore a lot funnier," Kendrick said.

Still, despite this new wave of comedic opportunities, women are still drastically underrepresented as writers, directors and producers in both TV and film.

"There's still only maybe three female writers or two female writers to 10 guys in any kind of writer's room," Cannon said.

But at least women's voices are now in the mix.

"You're not going to solve the problem, but you can start the conversation," Headland said. "I think part of your job, especially as a woman, is to let yourself be a little ugly and to show uglier parts of yourself. That's your job as a female artist."

MSI makes AMD-laden GX60 gaming laptop official with A10 heart ...

MSI launches GX60 allAMD gaming laptop with A10 processor, Radeon HD 7970M graphics

We can't say that there's a huge cross-section of buyers who want a gaming laptop but refuse to touch Intel components. Whatever the size, MSI likely has that group sewn up with the official unveiling of the GX60 following a stealth appearance at Computex. The 15.6-inch portable is built as showcase for AMD's latest mobile technology: it revolves around a 2.3GHz, quad-core A10-4600M processor using the Piledriver architecture as well as a Radeon HD 7970M to feed its 1080p screen at full speed. Thankfully, the PC is more than just a marketing vehicle and carries some of the gamer-tuned parts that we've seen in other MSI rigs, such as dual SSDs in a RAID stripe, a low-lag Killer networking chipset and a heavy-duty SteelSeries keyboard. Buying a GX60 may prove to be the real obstacle -- in keeping with most MSI introductions, there's no mention of a price or ship date, and none of the usual suspects have it in stock as of this writing.

More New Homes Being Built, Indicates Real Estate Market Improving

New home construction is one of the main indicators real estate experts analyze to help determine the health of the overall market. It also adds to the stability of the national economy as economists predict that each new house built adds three jobs. The St. Louis real estate market is experiencing a similar increase in new home construction as we are seeing nationally, adding validity to the theory the housing crisis is over.

2012 is the first year in over seven years that new home construction will add to the gross domestic product. August 2012 has seen a surge of 29.1% in new home starts from the same month a year ago. Tour Sony's TGS 2012 booth in our new video

At this year's Tokyo Game Show, there are tons of huge booths from publishers like Capcom, Namco Bandai, and Konami, but none of them packed as many games into their booth space as Sony did. We stopped by the booth to check out all the new PlayStation 3, Vita, and PSP games, and we filmed a tour of it so you can experience it for yourself. Take a look.

http://www.gamesradar.com/tour-sonys-tgs-2012-booth-our-new-video/

On top of that, we have many in-depth videos for the majors games at the booth. Check out our video demos for God of War: Ascension, Assassin's Creed III Liberation, Street Fighter X Tekken for Vita, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Technika Tune, Yakuza 5, Soul Sacrifice, Lost Planet 3, Naruto, and DmC: Devil May Cry.

Muslim protesters rally in Athens over anti-Islam video

ATHENS (Reuters) - Hundreds of Muslim protesters staged a rally in central Athens on Sunday to protest against a film made in California which mocks Islam's Prophet Mohammad, the first such demonstration in Greece.

The protesters chanted "All we have is Mohammad" and held banners reading "We demand an immediate punishment for those who tried to mock our Prophet Mohammad" as they prepared to march to the U.S. embassy.

There were brief moments of tension when some demonstrators hurled bottles at police, who responded with teargas.

Police shut down a subway station and were considering blocking the march before it reached the heavily guarded embassy to prevent possible violence, police officials said. Greece is home to hundreds of thousands of Muslims.

The anti-Islam film, posted on YouTube, has provoked protests in several Muslim countries. Related violence has included the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

Many Muslims regard any depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as blasphemous, let alone one which denigrates the Prophet.

French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo stoked the furor last week when it published cartoons featuring a naked Mohammad, and on Friday France banned street protests against the drawings.

Iranian students gathered at the French embassy in Tehran on Sunday to protest against the publication of the cartoons, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

They held placards reading "The silence of Muslims is a betrayal of the Koran" and "Shi'ite brothers, Sunni brothers, unity, unity", and chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel", Fars said.

Ann Coulter: ?Civil rights are for blacks', not immigrants?

Coulter (ABC)

On ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday, Ann Coulter said the Democratic party has shifted its strategic campaign focus to the Latino vote ahead of the November elections. Of course, the conservative firebrand phrased it a little differently.

"Democrats are dropping the blacks and moving on to the Hispanics," Coulter said during a roundtable discussion that featured Coulter, Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, former Clinton labor secretary Robert Reich and former Obama domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes.

Coulter's comments came in response to Ramos, who accused the GOP platform of ignoring immigration. "If Republicans don't do something with immigration," Ramos said, "they're going to lose not only this election, they might lose the White House for a generation."

Romney, Reich said, "is basically taking a position that is anti a large and the fastest growing segment of the electorate."

Earlier, Coulter was asked by about her criticism that Democrats have largely abandoned African-Americans when it comes to civil rights.

"I think the way liberals have treated blacks like children and many of their policies have been harmful to blacks, at least they got the beneficiary group right," Coulter said. "There is the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. We don't owe the homeless. We don't owe feminists. We don't owe women who are desirous of having abortions or gays who want to get married to one another. That's what civil rights has become for much of the left."

"Immigrant rights are not civil rights?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"No," Coulter responded, "No. I think civil rights are for blacks. What have we done to the immigrants? We owe black people something. We have a legacy of slavery. Immigrants haven't even been in this country."

In this Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 photo, Arab fans of the Lebanese group ?Mashrou Leila? cheer as the band performs, unseen, in the ancient Roman amphitheater in the Jordanian capital Amman. In this Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 photo, Hamed Sinno, 24, lead singer and song writer of the Lebanese group ?Mashrou Leila," laughs during an interview with the Associated Press. Sinno is a rare openly gay role model in a deeply homophobic region, and says he hopes he can inspire Arab gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual fans "to forge for themselves a sense of belonging to the region, in spite of the incredible repression they have to live through." (AP Photo/Diaa Hadid)

(AP) ? Hundreds of young Arabs joyfully screamed out obscenities, encouraged by the handsome, gay Lebanese lead singer at the concert in Jordan's capital. Police looked on worriedly. People outside asked what was going on.

It was a performance by the band Mashrou Leila, which uses a hybrid of velvety Lebanese slang and European instruments to address difficult, sometimes taboo issues of Middle Eastern societies. Lyrics of love and angst are intertwined with more difficult, sometimes taboo issues, with issues like poverty, premarital sex and homosexuality in this deeply homophobic region.

The success of the band, whose name is translated as "Night Project," appears to be another outgrowth of the Arab Spring uprisings that swept through the Mideast last year. Led by lead singer and song writer Hamed Sinno, a 24-year-old Freddy Mercury doppelganger and openly gay man, the band has been soundly embraced by Arab youth who see the music as part of a cultural and social revolution.

"They are about secularism, gay love, social problems that we don't talk about, that we don't accept, that we are afraid to discuss," said 19-year-old student Jalal Elias, of the northern Israeli city of Haifa, which has a large Arab-Palestinian population. "The kind of people who make this music ? they made the Arab Spring."

On a recent Friday, some 3,000 fans attended Mashrou Leila's concert in Amman's ancient Roman auditorium. Young men and women wore tight jeans, thick-framed glasses, and disheveled haircuts. Other women wore headscarves and modest Muslim dress.

They cheered as Sinno sung of a gay couple breaking up in a song called, "Smell the Jasmine."

"I wanted to be your housewife," Sinno crooned. "I wanted to raise your children."

The crowd happily screamed obscenities from the band's song "Gossip." Sinno later said in an interview with The Associated Press that Jordanian censors wouldn't him sing the lyrics "prostitute" and "pimp," so he let the fans sing it instead. They also sang along to "Dresses," of a couple broken apart by poverty and religious conflict. The song suggests the couple was having premarital sex ? another taboo issue.

Sinno said the band's music reflects the broader spirit of revolution. "I think the people that create music are the product of the same system that produces the revolutionaries we see changing the Arab world today," he said.

The band is one of many rock, hip hop and "electro-folk" groups connecting with a hazy Mideast demographic called "Arab Spring youth" ? educated, liberal, Muslims and Christians in their late teens and twenties.

Other musicians include folk rocker Youssra El-Hawary, the reggae inspired "Tout Ard," and rapper duo Oka-Ortega.

Many of the music groups existed before the Arab uprisings that began in January 2011 and toppled aging rulers in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and unleashed a civil war in Syria. But the artists have since grown in popularity ? partly because, according to Egyptian music producer Mohamed Gorab, edgier lyrics and Western-influenced music resonate in a revolutionary time.

"This is a new generation that's emerging," Gorab said in an interview. "They are feeling more freedom, and the music shows that."

With its commercial success, Mashrou Leila stands apart from the other bands. The group has performed in Cairo, Beirut, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and the Qataris capital Doha for audiences of around 3,000 people. In European music festivals, they play for non-Arabic speaking fans. Judging from Facebook and other social media, the band also has amassed a few dozen Israeli Jewish groupies.

Suggestive of their popularity, one music video has been shared on fan websites and amassed an estimated 250,000 hits. Mashrou Leila was even slated to open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Beirut this summer. But the Lebanese band canceled the gig after outrage from pro-Palestinian activists who were angry because the Red Hot Chili Peppers was also to perform in Israel.

Still, the band's successes are small compared to mainstream Arab pop stars who have millions of YouTube hits.

Stereotypical Arab pop divas dress lewdly, get plastic surgery to shrink their noses and swell their breasts, suggestively gyrate in luxurious settings, and are unusually pale in a region of olive-skinned people. Their muscular male counterparts frequently sport stubble and broody gazes.

Mashrou Leila began four years ago as a university jam band in the liberal Lebanese capital Beirut and adopted influences from Balkan melodies, American folk music, and mainstream pop. The six-member band of twentysomethings ? which includes one woman ? spread its music and swelled in popularity through friends, Facebook and YouTube. The group's fan base mostly appears to be young people who have been inspired by the Arab revolutions, as well as some of the social and cultural changes the uprisings produced.

But not all of the reforms achieved through the Arab Spring have been embraced by the young music enthusiasts. The revolutions also led to the election of Islamic governments and empowered ultraconservative Muslims called Salafis, dashing the hopes of some youths who sought liberal change.

Fan Jeries Ballan called Mashrou Leila "the real Arab Spring."

"What's the Arab Spring really about anyway?" said Ballan, 24. "It started out one way, and took a different direction."

A key indicator of the differences between Mashrou Leila's fans and older generations ? not to mention conservatives of any age ? is the attitudes toward Sinno's openly stated homosexuality.

At the Amman concert, Mashrou Leila fans said they didn't care. Gay fans said they saw Sinno as a role model.

"It's something we've come to accept," said concert-goer Lina Matar, 24, wearing a Muslim headscarf.

Sinno said he wanted the band's music to inspire Arab gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual fans "to forge for themselves a sense of belonging to the region, in spite of the incredible repressing they have to live through."

Outside the Roman amphitheater where the band performed, many Jordanians said they were offended by the Western-sounding music. An agitated elderly bearded man, flanked by a group of younger people, harassed the police and demanded to enter ? presumably to cause trouble. They left without going inside.

"Couldn't they protest against that film that insulted Islam? Isn't that more important than a concert?" grumbled day laborer Mohammed, 43. He was referring an amateurish anti-Islam video that Muslims say insults the Prophet Muhammad. The video sparked weeklong violence earlier this month that targeted U.S. and other Western embassies and left more than 30 dead in seven countries, including Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

But another woman standing outside the amphitheater said Mashrou Leila's lyrics seemed to reflect her life as working class black woman better than most Arab music.

"I like what I'm hearing," said Dima Hamoud, a 19-year-old of Sudanese descent.

Mayor MacLean says community devastated

Port Hawkesbury mayor Billy Joe MacLean responds to developments regarding the Point Tupper Mill on Friday. Steve Wadden - Cape Breton Post

Port Hawkesbury mayor Billy Joe MacLean responds to developments regarding the Point Tupper Mill on Friday.

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. ? A Nova Scotia mayor who has spearheaded the effort to save an idled paper mill says he?s devastated after a Vancouver company suddenly backed out of its bid Friday.

Port Hawkesbury Mayor Billy Joe MacLean said it was the worst news he has ever heard.

"It was the saddest day of my life," MacLean said in an interview Saturday. "I didn't sleep very well last night."

Pacific West Commercial Corp. issued a statement late Friday saying an unfavourable tax ruling from the Canada Revenue Agency made it impossible to ensure the economic viability of the former NewPage mill in Point Tupper.

The company said that despite the Nova Scotia government's efforts to come up with a compromise to ease the tax burden, both parties decided the tax implications could not be overcome.

"It is extremely disappointing for everyone involved in the year-long effort to restart the mill to realize that we have been unable to achieve our collective goal," company president Ronald Stern said in the statement.

MacLean said he is worried about the 300 employees who have been preparing to start operating one of the mill's two paper machines.

"There's a lot of anxiety," said MacLean. "Everybody's trying to evaluate their own position."

MacLean said he's not pointing fingers, but rather hoping to work with the federal and provincial governments to attract a new industry to the region.

The province's NDP government had placed a premium on keeping the mill open. With a $25-billion federal shipbuilding contract secured for the largely urban Halifax region, Premier Darrell Dexter wanted some economic success in rural Nova Scotia.

In recent weeks, critics suggested the province had gone too far with Pacific West, repeatedly pointing out that the company was prepared to pay $33 million for the mill while the province had set aside almost four times that amount.

On Friday, the premier said the province's efforts to restructure a $124-million aid package exposed the province to undue financial risk.

The government first announced the fund last month. At the time, it included $66.5 million in loans, $26.5 million of which would be forgiven if certain criteria including wage targets were met.

But the government said last Friday it would sweeten the fund after the Canada Revenue Agency rejected the tax break sought by Pacific West.

Dexter did not immediately return requests for comment, but said in a statement Friday he was disappointed on behalf of the people and businesses in southern Cape Breton. He said the company's move will be devastating for the mill's workers and their families.

"The province fought as hard as it could for those jobs because this government knows good jobs are the lifeblood of rural communities," Dexter said, adding he didn't regret going out on a limb for Cape Breton.

MacLean showed gratitude for the government's attempts to keep the mill in operation.

"We're grateful for that help, and we don't want the help to stop."

Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil said in the end, the government was putting too much money on the table.

"We had major concerns about the way the government was handling this and the amount of money and with the arrangements around power," said McNeil in an interview Saturday. "When you have a cut rate, it means someone else has to pay it."

The tax break request from Pacific West involved a complicated business arrangement with Nova Scotia Power Inc., the province's privately owned utility. The deal would have given the utility a 30 per cent stake in the company.

Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie said the government erred in yielding to Pacific West "every step of the way."

"I think all Nova Scotia taxpayers were getting nervous about where this might end up," said Baillie on Saturday. "I'm disappointed the mill is closing, but I do believe that the government ended up looking like they were desperate when, in fact, we needed a strong negotiating hand."

The mill opened in 1962 but shut down last September, throwing some 600 people out of work and affecting another 400 forestry contractors. At the time, NewPage cited the high Canadian dollar and increased rates for shipping and electricity as the reasons for its closure.

Padfone 2 set for announcement on October 16

Android Central

ASUS just mailed out invites to events in Milan, Italy, and Taipei Taiwan for a Padfone 2 announcement on October 16. We don't know much about the Padfone 2, but some sketchy benchmarks have been floating around suggesting that we'll see a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor in there.

The original Padfone was a bizarre Voltron of mobile gadgets, with the phonebeing devoured whole by the tablet, which was in turn docked with a keyboard, and was accompanied by a stylus that doubled as a Bluetooth headset. Sheer madness, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria, etc. etc. Check out our hands-on from Mobile World Congress for a closer look. We can only assume that the next generation will follow a similar form factor with a few refinements (thinner, faster), but who knows what else they'll add on top of that; maybe dual-booting to Windows when docked with the keyboard. Crazier things have happened.

Do you guys dig the form factor? How weird could ASUS get with the next Padfone while still being in the realm of feasibility?

Healthy Life Lessons: Psychological Approaches to Pain Management

????????????????????????????????????????????? Image Source

I don't know why, but I seem to be immune to painkillers.? For someone who periodically gets debilitating headaches (mostly allergy-related), this really sucks.

Regular or even extra strength over-the-counter drugs like acetomenophen (Tylenol), ibuprofin (Advil), or asceticylic acid (Aspirin) do about as much for me as Tic Tacs.? I watch Adam pop a single Advil and get pain relief and I'm envious.??Even prescription drugs don't seem to work for me.? Toradol, Tylenol 3s, and Naproxen?? All useless.? The low-dose oxycontins given to me after my c-section when I had Little A?? About as effective as Skittles.? I've had short-term success for headache relief by combining some of the prescription drugs, but this never lasts long.? Even the morphine they gave me when I was in labour with Big A (I wasn't dilating so they didn't give me the epidural until 9 hours into serious contractions), did absolutely nothing.? The nurses were shocked.

Of course, being a health-conscious individual, it concerns me to be taking large quantities of these drugs.? Chronic usage of even over-the-counter drugs can lead to serious health consequences like rebound headaches, bleeding ulcers,?and liver damage.? Tylenol 3s, in large enough quantity, and in combination?with other drugs (like 2 prescription strength naproxins) usually has the best chance of giving me some pain relief, but they also cause intestinal spasms which have me doubling over in pain.? Not good.

Yet whenever one of my brutal headaches hit, no matter how many times I remind myself how futile it is to pop pills, I end up so desperate for relief, that I cave and take some.? What's worse is, if I'm in a huge amount of pain, I will take more.? Two extra strength Advils, plus 3 Tylenol 1s (with codeine), was my latest experiment...which worked about as well as everything else (i.e. not at all).?? In addition, I think I've finally realized that I end up feeling worse when I take pills.? This is consistent with recent reports that overuse of pain medications can make headaches worse.

So a few weeks ago I made a decision that from now on, when I get a headache, I will NOT take any pills.? No pills.? Period.? After all, my doctor has said that sinus headaches typically do not respond to most of these pain relievers anyways, and thus prescribed me steroid nasal spray.? But the problem is, even when I am diligent about using it - as well as my?antihystamines, I still sometimes get these killer headaches.??So there?have already been a few days since I made my pledge when I have come very close to caving - like last week when my allergies were really bad and?I felt like my head was going to explode!? But I've stayed strong.? And you know what???My headaches often pass much faster than they usually do when I actually take pills for them.? And no stomach cramping!? I also feel better knowing I am not putting my health at risk by over-using these potentially dangerous drugs.

I feel so relieved because I had begun to feel so desperate and hopeless because of the severity of my heachaches and inability to get any relief.? I now feel much more confident that I can manage the pain without meds and that the pain will?be temporary? I've found that an ice pack on my forehead can help, as can deep breathing and staying calm when I feel a headache coming on.? For sinus headaches, continually flushing my sinuses with saline also helps alleviate the pain.

Although I am a therapist and strongly believe in the unity between mind and body, I've always been skeptical of cognitive approaches to pain management.? Until now, that is.? And there is certainly a lot of research that backs up the efficacy of psychological approaches to pain management.? The experience of pain is not only influenced by pathophysiology, but also by an individuals thoughts, feelings and behaviour.? Just learning more adaptive coping skills can provide lasting relief for individuals suffering from chronic pain.? Cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based programs are particularly effective.? Generally, therapists, hospitals and clinics offer individual and/or group pain management behaviour programs that run 8-12 weeks long.? The ultimate goal of these programs is to allow individuals to effectively self-manage pain on a long-term basis.

Honestly, if, in the past, you had suggested to me?that I could control the degree of my pain with my reaction to the pain, I would have hit you over the head with something I deemed heavy enough to expeience the pain I feel when I get one of these headaches.? But now, I agree.? It just goes to show the power of our thoughts and feelings and the intensity of the mind-body connection.

Whether it's migraines, cancer, fibromyalgia, back pain?or another condition, if you are suffering from poorly controlled chronic pain, explore the mental health resources available in your community that focus on pain management.? It might just allow you to ditch pills altogether.? I'm not saying everyone should stop taking pills.? If they work for you that's one thing...but if they really aren't helping, perhaps there are other things you can try.

Colorado man awarded $7.2 mill in "popcorn lung" lawsuit

DENVER (Reuters) - A U.S. federal court jury on Wednesday awarded a Colorado man $7.2 million in damages for developing a chronic condition known as popcorn lung from a chemical used in flavoring microwave popcorn.

Jurors agreed with the claims by Wayne Watson, 59, that the popcorn manufacturer and the supermarket chain that sold it were negligent by failing to warn on labels that the butter flavoring, diacetyl, was dangerous.

The condition is a form of obstructive lung disease that makes it difficult for air to flow out of the lungs and is irreversible, according to WebMd.

Watson, of suburban Denver, was the first consumer of microwave popcorn diagnosed with the disease, bronchiolitis obliterans, his attorney Kenneth McClain said.

Watson was diagnosed in 2007 at Denver's National Jewish Health, a respiratory health center, after years of inhaling the smell of artificial butter on the popcorn he said he ate daily.

The verdict was the latest in a line of cases in the past 15 years, starting with workers in popcorn plants where diacetyl was an ingredient, that has linked the chemical to health problems.

Jurors found Gilster-Mary Lee Corp, the Chester, Illinois, private-labeling manufacturer of the popcorn, liable for 80 percent of the $7,217,961 damages and the King Soopers supermarket chain and its parent, Kroger Co, liable for 20 percent.

An attorney for the defendants had told jurors that Watson's health problems were from his years of using dangerous chemicals as a carpet cleaner.

A spokeswoman for King Soopers and Kroger said the companies intended to appeal the decision. An attorney for Gilster-Mary Lee was not immediately available for comment.

Similar cases are pending in federal court in Iowa and in state court in New York, Watson's attorney said.

McClain said he has represented microwave popcorn and flavoring workers across the United States who began suing in 2004 and have been awarded large damages.

He said Dr. Cecile Rose, a witness for Watson and one of his physicians at National Jewish Health, made the connection between his disease and diacetyl when she asked him if he had been around large quantities of microwave popcorn.

She had been a consultant to the flavorings industry and had seen the same disease that Watson had among workers exposed to the chemical.

The jury took a day to reach its verdict after a nine-day trial.

(AP) ? An Ohio death-row inmate used his last words Thursday to repeatedly apologize to the family members of his two victims and tell them that he hopes they can let their pain die with him.

Donald Palmer, 47, was executed by lethal injection at the state prison in Lucasville in southern Ohio about 23 years after he shot and killed two men he didn't know along a rural road.

"I want you to know I've carried you in my heart for years and years," Palmer told six women in the room who are the widows, daughters and a niece of the men he killed. "I'm so sorry for what I took from you ... I hope your pain and hurt die with me today."

Palmer also told the women that he knows the pain of losing a parent, a sibling and a child, and that he wished his execution could bring their loved ones back to them.

"I know it can't," he said. "I pray that you have good lives now. I'm sorry."

Shortly after that, intravenous lines in both Palmer's arms began delivering a fatal dose of pentobarbital, causing his chest to heave as he breathed heavily and his eyes fluttered. Later his head twitched up and down, and nine minutes after that, the prison warden declared his time of death at 10:35 a.m.

Palmer was convicted of aggravated murder in the May 8, 1989, shooting deaths of Charles Sponhaltz and Steven Vargo along a Belmont County road in eastern Ohio. Both of the married fathers were strangers to Palmer, and both were shot twice in the head.

Palmer and a friend had been staking out the home of a man who once dated his ex-wife when Sponhaltz rear-ended his truck and was shot, according to court records. Vargo was a passing driver who happened upon Sponhaltz's killing and was also shot.

Their daughters and widows spoke to each other before and during the execution, with one saying that the small, brick execution chamber with a metal bed was too elaborate for Palmer.

"There should be no sheet on that damn bed," said Charlene Farkas, one of Sponhaltz's daughters. "It should be in the ground in the dirt."

Some family members spoke to reporters after the execution, saying that they believed Palmer's apology was sincere but that it was too little, too late.

"When you murder somebody, what good is an apology?" said Tiffany Nameth, Sponhaltz's widow. "You don't go out and murder two people and expect to get sympathy. In my eyes, he didn't deserve any sympathy."

Sponhaltz's other daughter, Tiffany Sponhaltz-Pugh, said that she was happy justice was served.

"We finally have closure to this situation after 23 years," she said, adding: "There's nothing that can bring back my father."

Palmer's lawyer, David Stebbins ? who also witnessed the execution ? said the state followed its execution procedure to the letter as far as he could tell and reiterated that Palmer truly felt remorse for the pain he had caused and thought it was time that his execution move forward.

Stebbins, who hadn't witnessed an execution before, called the process "so sterile and orchestrated."

"I guess I haven't sorted out all of my feelings," he said. "It's very strange to watch someone be put to death intentionally."

In the 24 hours before his execution, Palmer visited with his grown daughter and son, his ex-wife and his spiritual advisers, said JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

She described one of the visits between Palmer and his children as "very emotional."

"They prayed together, they were reading the Bible and singing," Smith said, adding that Palmer also was calm and cooperative as he's spoken to the execution team.

According to court records, Palmer told police that he and co-defendant Edward Hill were driving from Columbus to the Belmont County home of a man who had dated Palmer's ex-wife and Hill's sister.

As they were driving back and forth in front of the home, Sponhaltz ? who was keeping an eye on the house ? lightly hit the back of their pickup with his own truck and yelled at them: "What in the hell are you trying to prove?" according to the records.

Palmer then shot Sponhaltz twice in the head.

Vargo, a passing driver, stopped and asked "What the hell did you guys do?" Palmer told police, according to the records. Palmer then shot Vargo twice in the head.

Sponhaltz's body was dumped in a field; Vargo's was left on the road.

Hill, 46, was convicted for his role in the crimes and sentenced to 35 years to life in prison.

Palmer's last meal on Wednesday night include a chipped ham and Velveeta cheese sandwich on wheat, ranch-flavored Doritos, peanut M&Ms, hazelnut ice cream, cheesecake and soda. He declined to eat breakfast Thursday.

Nine Ohio inmates are scheduled for execution through March 2014.
