First female Anglican bishop in Africa

Bishop-elect Ellinah Ntfombi Wamukoya
On July 18, the diocese of Swaziland elected the first female Anglican bishop in Africa, 20 years after the Church of the Province of Southern Africa voted to ordain women.
The Rev. Ellinah Ntfombi Wamukoya, 61, succeeds Bishop Meshack Mabuza, who announced his retirement last year. Wamukoya will become the 24th active female bishop in the Anglican Communion, according to the Anglican Communion News Service.
??There was great rejoicing when the outcome was released,? said a statement issued by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, primate of the Church of Southern Africa. He described the election process as ?rigorous and spirit-filled.?
Wamukoya is currently chaplain at the University of Swaziland and St. Michael?s High School in the town of Manzini, central Swaziland. She is also CEO of the City Council of Manzini.

Bizarre fish has penis on its head
A new species of fish with a penis on its head has been discovered in Vietnam. But it's not what you're picturing ? actually it's probably worse. This penis includes a rod and a jagged hook used for grabbing the female during sex.
The fish, Phallostethus cuulong, was discovered by researchers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. It is the newest member of the Phallostethidae family, a group of fish with small, skinny, nearly transparent bodies that live in Southeast Asia, and which are distinguished by the location of their sex organs.
The more technical name for the male fish's penis is the priapium, a complex, muscular organ that looks like it's attached to the fish's chin. The priapium includes the urogential opening and the anus, as well as a bony rod and a sawlike hook, used to clutch on to the female during mating, the researchers said. The female fish's genital opening is also located at her throat.
The hook may sound sinister but it seems to serve a practical function. For most fish, fertilization takes place outside the female's body, but for the Phallostethus cuulong and the rest of the family, the eggs are fertilized inside. Hooking on to his mate during sex probably ensures that the male fish will have more success in fertilizing her. [ See Photos of Penis Head Fish ]
The fish, though bizarre in its penis placement, is not the only organism with a scary sex organ. During sex, the hermaphroditic sea slug, Siphopteron quadrispinosum, playing the male role will stab its partner with a syringelike penile appendage and inject prostate fluids into the body.
Equipped with large hooks at its base and several tiny spines, the sea slug penis latches onto the female reproductive system.
Specimens of the new fish were collected and studied by researchers from Can Tho University in Vietnam and zoologist Koichi Shibukawa of the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation in Tokyo, Japan.
The new species is known from nine specimens, six males and three females, collected from shallow waters around banks of slow-flowing turbid canals and rivers in Soc Trang and Tra Vinh Provinces, Vietnam.
A description of Phallostethus cuulong is detailed in a July edition of the journal Zootaxa.

Jabra's $200 Solemate portable Bluetooth speaker wants to kick the Jambox aside
If you looked at the photo above thinking Dr. Martens got into the portable speaker game, you're not so far off. Jabra's taken its Bluetooth headset know-how and blended it with a footwear-inspired design to create its first portable speaker, the $200 Solemate. At first glance the shoe theme does seem a bit silly, but don't let that fool you as this Bluetooth 3.0 speaker packs some notable specs -- especially pitted against the Jawbone Jambox. Available inblack or white, the features rubberized casing that's shock- and water-resistant, and can be supplemented with an included waterproof soundbag (similar to the Braven 625). Taking it a step further, the unit actually has a "heel tab" for carrying purposes and a replaceable sole, which also serves as a storage point for a handy 3.5mm cable.
Moving onto to its less quirky features, at the front you'll find a duo of acoustic tweeters separated by a subwoofer with a passive bass radiator on the back -- all together they pump out up to a whopping 120dB of volume. On top are two volume buttons, along with a multifunction button for commanding calls and enabling its Voice Guidance feature. Lastly, the right side houses two indicator lights (battery and Bluetooth), a power and pairing switch, a 3.5mm jack and a micro-USB input for charging and direct digital audio connection. According to Jabra the unit is "about the the size and weight of a water bottle," and you can expect to get around eight to ten hours of use per charge. We'll be giving you our in-depth impressions of the speaker before long, however, the Solemate will be up for pre-order today at the likes of Best Buy and Amazon, and set to release on September 2nd if you're already interested. Apple admits SMS vulnerability, pushes iMessage
In response to recent news revealing an iOS texting security flaw, Apple released a statement claiming to know about the flaw and urging alternative messaging methods.
The statement reads, "Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks."
"One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown website or address over SMS."
The response isn't the affirmation consumers want, but it is an honest account of a potentially dangerous security loophole that Apple is now calling a "limitation".
Texts matter
It might not be readily apparent why replacing a "reply-to" field in an SMS message could be so potentially harmful to the consumer. Unless you do banking by text, shopping by text, or interact with business entities by text, a spoofed text will look like spam no matter who it's from.
For the millions of mobile users who do have alerts sent to their phones via text, this presents a real quandary.
Yes, iMessage verifies sender and receiver accounts before submitting the message which makes it a more secure system than iOS SMS. However, banks, airlines, and other business haven't started offering iMessage update options yet, so the practical issue that the security flaw exposes remains unsolved.
Perhaps what's most troubling about Apple's statement is the absence of a proposed plan to fix the SMS "limitation".
The iOS 6 beta has also been confirmed as vulnerable to this issue. Here's to hoping that the full release fares better.

Kahl?a Iced Coffee and Vanilla Ice Cream Float - Creative Culinary
I?m so not ready for summer to be over; our summer was so damn miserably hot (I mean record breaking HOT!); added to the loss of a huge tree last year that shaded the big bay window in my kitchen for 20 years and the combination led to some moments of stifling heat in the hub of my home. Now that the weather has cooled and it?s in the 80?s I want it to stay for a while?and this cocktail is my ode to summer NOT being gone yet!
When the folks at?Kahl?a asked if I would like to try their new Kahl?a Iced Coffee I almost responded with ?Duh, yeah.? Luckily I put on my big girl pants and wrote back much more eloquently, settling for ?SURE!? For many years I only considered Kahlua for warm drinks but thankfully things have changed. This Mexican coffee sure helped and on top of that; I am totally an iced coffee type in the warmer months (don?t come NEAR me with talk of pumpkins or fall; it is STILL summer, remember?).
I didn?t want to take away from the ease of drinking one of these guys so I kept it very simple?some vanilla ice cream, the Espresso Kahl?a Iced Coffee and a touch of sparkling soda. Dare I admit I had this for a ?lunch break? or would you think poorly of me? Well I did! It?s Friday right??? (Don?t think about it too hard and realize I was making it on Thursday, OK?)
Seriously; these are fun and only $2.50/can. I used the Espresso but they are also available in Iced Mocha and Iced Coffee with Cinnamon Spice (I?ll save this one for fall!). These would be great for any gathering but the convenience makes them perfect for more?picnics, games and perhaps a movie (much better than sneaking in candy!). Know what else? That Mexican coffee I love? Super easy too. Use a bit larger glass, sugar the rim and add a shot of tequila?voila; a quick Mexican coffee. This could be trouble.
Make no mistake?there is real booze in there and the resulting cocktail/dessert? An ?oh my that?s good? moment for sure. My dog is even crying for a sip. I?m not sharing.
Kahl?a Iced Coffee and Vanilla Ice Cream Float
Ingredients
- 1/2 pint vanilla ice cream
- 1 can Kahlua Espresso Iced Coffee
- Sparkling Soda
Preparation
- Chill 2 glasses in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- Put 2 scoops of ice cream into each glass.
- Divide the Kahlua Espresso Iced Coffee between the two glasses.
- Top off with sparkling water. Add a straw sip away!

Khan Academy and learning programming ? Garth's CS Education ...
I had to go look at the new Khan Academy Computer Science lessons. As expected they are not Computer Science, but Programming.? The interactive IDE was really cool but overall I was very unimpressed.? Do not get me wrong, I love KA.? When my high school students come into my math class with chemistry or physics homework and ask questions I can refresh myself on how to do whatever it is they are doing.? I tell my math kids to use it as a reference or reinforcement.? These programming videos I put in the ?cute but not really useful? category.? They are not good for reference (which one do I look at?), the narrator talks at warp 9, and many of the explanations are in the categories of ?huh??, ?what did she say?? and ?that makes no sense?.? I know how to program at this level so everything makes sense to me.? For a new student or someone trying to learn programming on their own I think this would be a disaster.? With a teacher discussing and supervising as the lessons are being done I think these would be cool.? The teacher can point out the object of the lesson, discuss alternative code or methods and teach trouble shooting/problem solving.? But then you have lost the whole point of KA lessons.? In Programming I basically teach the same material as the KA programming lessons using Small Basic, Scratch and Corona.? A lot more fun, a lot more versatile and a lot more exploratory.
Teaching programming is more than teaching code.? It has to include IDE management, file management, experiencing multiple environments, program planning, problem dissection, top down and bottom up planning, and most importantly, problem solving.? In my (very humble) opinion learning to type code and language syntax is one of the least important aspects of programming.? Admittedly you cannot program without it but it is still trivial compared to the importance of learning to problem solve.? Learning to type code is job training, and low income job training at that.? Learning to problem solve has to be the focus of teaching programming.? Problem solving and coding need to be blended together in such a way the problem is the focus and the code is just one method of solving it.
These KA programming lessons are not a step in the right direction.
I really do like the interactive code and drawing window thing though.? I could really do something with that.

Colleges Rally to Kick Chick-fil-A Off Campuses - masteradrian's ...
College students will protest Chick-fil-A, warns the executive director of Campus Pride, and the organizations responsible for keeping it on campus or supporting its college bowl game should take notice.
Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-A president, is in for a shock when thousands of college students go ?Back-to-School? this month. His antigay remarks coupled with Chick-fil-A?s near-decade-long secretive funding of documented hate groups and antigay organizations ? to the accumulated sum of $5 million ? adds fuel to an already burning fire.?
As the executive director of Campus Pride, the leading national organization for LGBT students and campus groups, I have heard complaints about Chick-fil-A for years now.? The company?s presence and noncompliance with LGBT-inclusive policies on college campuses has been the subject of petitions and protests for as long as I can remember.? The truth is finally out, and campuses are starting to take action.
Up until now, the only thing that has allowed Chick-fil-A to survive, in most instances, has been its clever marketing and denial that it was anything but a family-focused, Christian-run business that treats everyone with ?dignity and respect.? ?
The Chick-fil-A controversy has changed all that forever. The company brand has radically redefined itself as a divisive, political symbol.? It stands publicly against same-sex marriage and uses its profits to fund groups proudly and aggressively working against the rights of LGBT people, advocating their criminalization, psychological abuse and death. Among the chosen recipients of funds are some of the worst-of-the-worst: Exodus International, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.?
I?m not surprised that a company masquerading inside of cow suits to sell chicken would trick people into believing that ?family friendly? is different from ?anti-gay.? Chick-fil-A and its president, however, underestimate college students and have proven that they are out of touch with the next generation?s values of respect and tolerance.
Gallup suggests that young adults ages 18 to 34 are overwhelmingly in favor of LGBT rights including 77% in support of legalizing gay and lesbian relationships. The Higher Education Research Institute?s annual Freshman Survey echoes the support for same-sex marriage and also the fact that three quarters of college students today favor adoption by gay and lesbian couples.
I have no doubt in the near future that colleges and universities will be moving away from the Chick-fil-A brand for dining options on campus. ?Most campuses?? ? and businesses like Jim Henson Company ? do not wish to be associated with a brand that has become synonymous with the funding of hate groups and espousing propaganda for an antigay agenda.
The signs of change are already here. Last week, Duke?s vice president for Student Affairs, Dr. Larry Moneta, stated that Chick-fil-A will not be returning to campus after renovations in its West Union.? This was in response to an email from an alum who objected to Chick-fil-A being on campus.? Moneta clarified that the decision was made prior to the recent controversy; however, students on campus had raised concerns over Chick-fil-A prior to renovations.? They have serious questions to ask if their own diversity and non-discrimination policies mean anything at all.
Nevertheless, the fervor over Chick-fil-A has escalated beyond disassociation and merely being told to not buy a chicken sandwich.? This past week Campus Pride was informed about an incident at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey where a fraternity was tabling next to the Chick-fil-A restaurant on campus. Whenever an out gay student on campus would walk past the table, the frat guys would chant: "We love Chick-fil-A? and then scream ?Faggot.?? Talk about feeding hate.
Campuses have every right to deny doing business with a food vendor, especially one that creates a divisive, potentially unsafe learning environment for students. It?s just not worth it. Plus, there is no justification for a business operating on campus that directly funds hate group activity toward a population of students represented within the campus community.
Companies like Chartwells, Aramark and Sodexo who hold the food service contracts on these campuses also must be held accountable for their advocacy of the Chick-fil-A brand.? These food service contractors are the gateway for most, if not all, of the Chick-fil-A dining establishments on college campuses.? All three of these food service contractors want to be seen as LGBT-friendly businesses. Two of these companies, Aramark and Sodexo, score above 90% on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index for an LGBT-inclusive workplace.? Should they now?
All of this spells trouble for the Chick-fil-A brand; even Pat Robertson knows this to be true. It is not a coincidence that the televangelist took to the airwaves this past week chiding college students protesting Chick-fil-A to ?shut their mouths.?? That?s exactly what Chick-fil-A hopes for ? that young people will stop talking about this and it will go away. They won?t, and it won?t.
The fact is that Chick-fil-A is in serious jeopardy on college campuses and with its future consumers.? A Chick-fil-A billboard in the downtown Atlanta skyline this week reads: ?WHEN YOU EAT CHIKEN, OUR FUTURZ LOOKZ BRIGHT.?? Nothing could be further from reality for the future of Chick-fil-A on college campuses.

Rams drop plans to play in London in 2013, 2014
ST. LOUIS (AP) ? The St. Louis Rams are dropping plans to play home games in London in 2013 and 2014, citing a need to focus on improvements to their stadium.
The Rams said Monday that they will go ahead with plans to use a home game to play the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 28 while withdrawing their commitment for home games in London the following two seasons.
"We are looking forward to playing in London this season as the NFL's international series offers a unique opportunity to grow the American football audience, expand the Rams' brand to international fans and enhance St. Louis on the global stage," said Kevin Demoff, executive vice president of the Rams. "However, moving forward we believe our attention needs to be on the ongoing first-tier process" involving the Edward Jones Dome.
The dome is owned by the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Bureau and leased to the Rams for home games. The lease agreement signed when the team moved to St. Louis in 1994 allows for periodic evaluations of whether it is among the top 25 percent of all the NFL's 31 stadiums (the New York Jets and Giants share a stadium).
The bureau and the Rams have been negotiating over improvements since at least January. Unless a deal is worked out, the Rams could break the lease and potentially leave St. Louis after the 2014 season.
The Rams said they worked closely with the NFL in deciding to drop the London games. NFL Vice President of International Chris Parsons said the league was working to add another game for 2013 "in response to the growth in popularity of our sport. We hope to finalize these plans in the months ahead."
NFL owners have agreed to play regular-season games in the United Kingdom for the next five seasons and Commissioner Roger Goodell has repeatedly spoken of the possibility of a full-time franchise their one day. The NFL first played at Wembley in 2007, with the New York Giants beating the Miami Dolphins 13-10. Since then, seven other teams have visited, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers making the trip twice.
The Rams and the bureau are at odds about what needs to be done, and how much it would cost, to get the 18-year-old dome that was built with taxpayer money to first-tier status.The agreement to play "home" games in London each of the next three seasons had been met with some scorn in St. Louis since that would have provided for just seven regular-season games in St. Louis each of those seasons.
The CVC privately proposed to the Rams a modest $48 million plan in January that would have been publicly funded. When that was rejected, the CVC in February announced a plan for $124 million in improvements that included better amenities and a massive new scoreboard. It would have required to Rams to pay for $64 million of the cost. Voter approval in St. Louis city and St. Louis County would have been required for the rest.
The Rams countered with a much more elaborate plan calling for a new roof with a sliding panel, replacing much of the brick exterior with a glass front, even re-routing a nearby street. The Rams did not provide a cost estimate but mayoral aide Jeff Rainford said the team's plan would cost about $700 million and the dome, which also hosts conventions, would have to be closed for renovation for up to three years, potentially costing the city $500 million in revenue.
The Rams were 2-14 last season, tied for the worst in the NFL with Indianapolis, and are 15-65 over the past five seasons. They lost their preseason opener to the Colts 38-3 on Saturday in the debut of new coach Jeff Fisher.

Afghan suicide attacks kill 36: officials
Suicide bombers killed 36 people Tuesday, mostly civilians shopping for Eid celebrations, in the capital of Afghanistan's Nimroz province on the border with Iran, officials said.
The attack on Zaranj city is the biggest in recent memory in the relatively peaceful province and one of the deadliest anywhere in the war-torn country this year. At least 66 people were injured.
Three suicide attackers out of an original group of 11 blew themselves up in separate areas of the city, one outside a hospital, police said.
"This was a group of 11 attackers who wanted to conduct simultaneous attacks across the city," deputy provincial police chief Mujibullah Latifi told AFP.
"Security forces killed two of the suicide attackers last night and detained three others this morning. Three managed to detonate themselves while three others were gunned down.
"We have a lot of civilian casualties because two of the attackers detonated themselves near a bazaar where many people had gathered to do shopping for Eid", the Muslim celebration at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, he said.
"We have confirmation that 21 civilians and 15 members of the security forces have been killed in these attacks and more than 66 others injured," provincial governor Abdul Karim Brahawi told AFP.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but similar attacks are usually blamed on Taliban insurgents fighting to overthrow the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
The attack in the normally peaceful province comes after 11 Afghan policemen were killed there on Saturday when one of their colleagues, believed to be a Taliban infiltrator, opened fire on them.
That incident, in Delaram district of Nimroz, was the latest in a series of shootings in which members of the Afghan security forces have targeted local and foreign colleagues.
A day earlier, three American soldiers were shot dead by an Afghan policeman who invited them to a meal in Helmand province. Three other troops were killed by an Afghan civilian employed on a NATO base in the same province.
Green-on-blue attacks, in which Afghans turn their weapons against their foreign allies, have killed a total of 37 international soldiers this year, according to a NATO count.
But Afghan troops and police have also come under increasing pressure as they take over more responsibility for security as NATO troops prepare to leave the country.
And civilians continue to bear the brunt of the war.
The United Nations said 1,145 Afghan non-combatants lost their lives, mostly in Taliban and other insurgent attacks, between January 1 and June 30 this year. Last year, a record 3,021 civilians died.
The spread of violence to Nimroz will add to growing concerns over the country's future once some 130,000 NATO troops withdraw as planned by the end of 2014, handing responsibility for security to Afghan forces.
Western politicians keen to get their troops out of an increasingly unpopular war regularly talk up the ability of the Afghan army and police to cope on their own, but there is widespread fear of a multi-factional civil war once they leave.

When it became clear that Paul Ryan would be the Veep nominee this morning, the New York State Immigrant Action Center posted what might be the first race card play against Ryan as Veep nominee, accusing him of using the allegedly racist term ?anchor babies?:
Paul Ryan has been tapped to be Mitt Romney?s running mate. Romney decided to pass on making a play for immigrant and Latino voters in favor of picking someone who is unlikely to appeal to these growig demographics.
At this town hall in Wisconsin, a man identifying himself as a retired marine makes a speech making bizarre and racist claims about Latino immigrants. Ryan responds to this rambling set of conspiracy theories with agreement. Ryan then deploys the most racist term used by anti-immigrant radicals. He refers to United States citizens born to Latino parents as ?anchor babies? even though the 14th Amendment to the Constitution calls them ?citizens?.
There is nothing racial much less racist about the term ?anchor babies,? which has a long history of use.? The term applies regardless of race, and applies just as much to European or Asian women who come here for the purpose of giving birth on U.S. soil as it does to Mexicans.? This is just another attempt to term ?racist? non-racial language as a way of shaping the political debate.
Putting aside these semantics, here is the video linked, and it is clear that when Ryan utters the words ?anchor babies? he is reading back what a questioner had said, not adopting the phrase himself.? He then goes on to give a fairly moderate explanation that it is a constitutional issue as to the status of such babies, and that if the borders were enforced there would be no problem:
None of this is surprising. Just like with Palin, there will be a full-throttled attempt to demonize Ryan on the most personal terms, and the race card will be played frequently.
