Police: Titans player dies in apparent suicide

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Tennessee Titans reserve receiver O.J. Murdock has died of an apparent suicide, Tampa police say.

Police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said officers found the 25-year-old Murdock inside his car Monday morning with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school.

He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.

Murdock did not report to training camp over the weekend because of what the team said at the time was a personal issue.

"We are shocked and saddened to hear of O.J. Murdock's death this morning," the Titans said in a statement Monday. "In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them. He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year's training camp. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy."

As a senior at Middleton in 2005, Murdock was rated the 10th-best wide receiver recruit in the nation by Rivals.com. He signed with South Carolina, but played in only four games, making one catch, after redshirting his first season. He was arrested for shoplifting at a Florida department store during that 2006 season and suspended.

Murdock transferred to Pearl River Community College in Mississippi and then to Division II Fort Hays State in Kansas. As a senior in 2010, he had 60 catches for 1,290 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Two More Nearing AIDS 'Cure' After Bone Marrow Transplants, Doctors Say

The so-called Berlin patient is famously the only person in the world who has been cured of HIV. But he may soon have company.

Two people in Boston also seem to be free of HIV after undergoing bone marrow transplants for cancer, just as the Berlin patient did five years ago. The crucial difference is that the Boston patients have not yet stopped taking anti-HIV drugs ? although that may happen in the coming months.

Harvard researchers got an enthusiastic response from an overflow crowd when they presented the first report on the patients at the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C.

"As far as we've been able to measure, we can't find evidence of HIV infection in the patients' blood or blood plasma, and their antibody levels against HIV are dropping," Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes of Brigham and Women's Hospital told Shots. "The antibody evidence tells us there is little if any persisting HIV protein to trigger an anti-HIV response."

Kuritzkes is careful not to claim cure of HIV, although he says it's "entirely possible" that the two patients are cured.

"We can't say we've replicated the Berlin patient's cure at this point because our patients remain on antiretroviral therapy," Kuritzkes says. Only if they stop therapy for months and years, without seeing a rebound of HIV in their blood, can these new bone marrow transplant patients be declared cured.

Meanwhile the Boston patients are shedding light on just what may have cured Timothy Ray Brown, the Berlin patient. He's an American HIV patient from Seattle who had two bone marrow transplants for leukemia while he was living in Berlin more than five years ago.

Brown has been free of daily antiviral drugs ever since with no reappearance of the virus. Thus, he's considered "functionally" cured, even if traces of HIV genes may persist in some of his cells. (That's a matter of some uncertainty.)

It's been widely assumed that the magic in Brown's cure resides in the stem cells he got from a bone marrow donor. Those donor cells lack a receptor called CCR5 that HIV uses to enter immune cells.

Not necessarily, the Boston researchers say. The donor cells their patients got did not lack the receptor. So what's happening with them must be different from the Berlin patient.

The Boston researchers think their might-be-cures are due to two factors:

• The patients got a milder form of pre-transplant chemotherapy. As a result, they were able to stay on their anti-HIV drugs. That protected the transplanted donor cells from becoming infected with any HIV that might have been hiding out in their bodies.
• The donor cells most likely killed off the patients' own HIV-infected immune cells as the bone marrow transplants took effect.

This second phenomenon is called graft-versus-host disease. The donor cells see the patients' native cells as foreigners and attack them.

"The success of a bone marrow transplant depends on having the right amount of graft-versus-host disease," Kuritzkes says. "You need a little bit. You hope not to have so much that you get clinically sick from it."

The Berlin patient also had episodes of graft-versus-host disease. That could help explain why his HIV infection was extinguished ? or driven to such low levels that his new immune system is able to control it.

It's possible that the lack of CCR5 receptors on the donor cells did contribute to the Berlin patient's cure. But scientists are excited by the possibility that a cure may not require donor cells lacking CCR5 receptors. That would widen the donor pool, since very few people are lucky enough to lack CCR5.

Another small step on the road to a cure comes in a report by David Margolis of the University of North Carolina published this week in Nature. He writes that a cancer drug called vorinostat can smoke HIV out of its hidden reservoirs. Researchers are wondering whether they could combine this with a way of killing the virus before it can start a new cycle of infection ? a strategy called "shock and kill."

Dr. Steven Deeks of the University of California San Francisco warns not to expect that the road to a cure will be a quick dash. "I would be shocked," he said at a press conference, if scientists designed a workable cure within the next decade. "But it's at least possible, and we all think it's worth pursuing."

Missing out on the London Games, which start on Friday, appears to have been good fortune for a Spanish government struggling to keep a handle on its debts. Now there's time for a recovery in the Spanish economy long before 2020.

Madrid is competing against Istanbul and Tokyo. The host of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games will be announced on Sept. 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

United Technologies beats Street in second quarter

(Reuters) - United Technologies Corp reported a second-quarter profit that easily topped analysts' expectations and won final regulatory approval on Thursday for its $16.5 billion takeover of Goodrich Corp , setting the stage for the deal to close this week.

Shares of United Tech rose nearly 1 percent in morning trading, as the higher-than-expected profit overshadowed the company's warning that full-year earnings would be roughly flat with 2011 due to the weak European economy.

The world's largest maker of elevators and air conditioners said it would step up its planned restructuring spending to $500 million this year from a prior $450 million target, as it copes with a slowing economy.

This week, the company reached deals to sell two smaller businesses to help fund its largest-ever takeover.

Second-quarter net income attributable to common shareholders came to $1.33 billion, up less than 1 percent from $1.32 billion a year earlier.

Earnings of $1.62 per share from continuing operations beat the analysts' average forecast of $1.41, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue fell 4.6 percent to $13.81 billion from $14.47 billion and below Wall Street estimates of $14.44 billion. Factoring out the weakening euro and the sale of some businesses, revenue would have been up 1 percent.

Late on Wednesday, United Tech agreed to sell some industrial component parts of its Hamilton Sundstrand arm to Carlyle Group LP and BC Partners Ltd for $3.46 billion, just two days after reaching a $550 million deal to sell its Rocketdyne space arm to GenCorp Inc .

The quarterly earnings report treats Rocketdyne and the Hamilton industrial arms -- as well as United Tech's Clipper Windpower and fuel cell businesses, for which the company is still seeking buyers -- as discontinued.

United Tech shares were up 0.8 percent at $73.22 on the New York Stock Exchange, driven by the beat.

"They crushed it," said analyst Brian Langenberg, of Langenberg & Co.

GOODRICH ON TRACK TO CLOSE THIS WEEK

U.S., European and Canadian authorities issued their final approvals on Thursday for the planned takeover of Goodrich. That deal, first agreed to in September, will boost United Tech's annual revenues by about $8 billion a year and expand the Hartford, Connecticut-based company's lineup of aerospace equipment to include landing gear, wheels and brakes.

As a condition of the approval, United Tech will need to sell Goodrich's power generation and small-engine control operations.

United Tech Chief Executive Officer Louis Chenevert shook up his company's portfolio of businesses to get the deal done, putting several business units on the block.

The Hamilton and Rocketdyne deals helped the company sharply reduce the amount of equity needed to issue to fund the Goodrich acquisition. When United Tech announced the deal in September, it had planned to sell $4.6 billion in new common shares. It backed away from that move, which was unpopular with stockholders, and last month sold just $1 billion of convertible notes.

CUTS 2012 VIEW

United Tech lowered its full-year earnings forecast to a range of $5.25 to $5.35 per share, down from an April outlook of $5.30 to $5.50.

The company said it expected 2012 sales of $58 billion to $59 billion, compared with the previous forecast of $61 billion to $62 billion.

The euro's fall against the dollar has hit the industrial sector this quarter, as it diminishes the value of sales made in Europe.

United Tech's industrial peers, including General Electric Co , Honeywell International Inc and Textron Inc have largely beaten Wall Street's expectations for the quarter, easing investor worries about a slowing global economy.

United Tech shares are roughly flat for the year, lagging the 4 percent rise of the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji>.

Romney compliments Olympic preparation after tizzy in British press

LONDON -- Mitt Romney found that all politics are, in fact,?local after being forced Thursday to clarify remarks about London's preparation for the Olympics, which prompted a minor uproar in the British press.

In his interview last night with NBC?s Brian Williams, Romney called several logistical issues at the 2012 Olympic games here ?disconcerting? -- including a contracted security firm?s failure to provide enough personnel -- and said that a possible planned strike by customs and immigration officials was ?not something which is encouraging.?

Local press seized on the comments, which generated buzz on British television today and which one newspaper columnist called ?derisory." Even Prime Minister David Cameron reacted, pointing out that the London games were being held in a major metropolitan area, not in ?the middle of nowhere,? a comment interpreted as a reference to the games Romney headed in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Romney backtracked somewhat in comments to reporters outside the prime minister's residence, offering effusive praise for the London games, and calling the city's preparation for the event "really quite an accomplishment."

?I don?t know of any Olympics that?s ever been able to run without any mistakes whatsoever, but they?re small, and I was encouraged, for instance to see, things that could have represented a real challenge?such as immigration and customs officers on duty, that is something which was resolved and the people are all pulling together,? Romney said in a short availability with both American and British reporters.

?I?m very delighted with the prospects of a highly successful Olympic games,? Romney responded to a follow-up question. ?What I?ve seen shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organization and I expect the games to be highly successful."

The press availability capped a busy afternoon for the presumptive GOP nominee, who also met with an array of other current and former British leaders, including the deputy prime minister, foreign minister and leader of the opposition Labour Party -- along with former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Romney also tipped his hand at having met with the director of MI6, the British intelligence agency; the meeting wasn't on Romney's official itinerary, but Romney made reference to the meeting in his remarks.

Press were allowed to record only the opening pleasantries between Romney and his hosts, but aides to the campaign told reporters that a wide range of issues were discussed in each meeting. Romney and Foreign Secretary William Hague discussed economic policy, trade, and the deteriorating situation in Syria.

Romney elaborated somewhat on his discussions about foreign affairs during his comments to reporters, saying he not only discussed Syria but several other regional hot spots, including Iran, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

?I don't want to refer to any comments made by leaders representing any other nations,? Romney said when asked to describe the conversations in more detail. ?Nor do I want to describe foreign policy position which I might have while I?m on foreign soil. I think discussions of foreign policy should be made by the president, and the current administration, not by those who are seeking office.?

Romney?s first full day in London comes as the candidate begins a three-nation foreign trip set to also include stops in Israel and Poland, and which mixes private meetings, public appearances and fundraisers with Americans abroad.

Later this evening, Romney will hold one such high-dollar fundraiser at a luxury London hotel, with a minimum ticket price of $25,000 per person. In keeping with US election law, only American citizens will be allowed to donate and attend the fundraiser, and an invitation to the event examined by NBC News says passports will be checked at the door to ensure citizenship.

Afterwards, Romney is expected to attend a reception honoring American athletes at the USA House in the Olympic village. Romney?s experience in running the 2002 Salt Lake City games was a regular topic in his meetings here today, as were his plans for taking in some of the London games.

Romney told Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg he planned to attend a swimming event later this week because ?Americans typically do well in swimming.?
